This document specifies a method for determining the existent gum content of aviation fuels and the gum content of motor gasoline or other volatile distillates. It includes the determination of products containing ethanol (up to a volume fraction of 85 %) and ether-type oxygenates and deposit control additives. For determination of gum content in automotive ethanol (E85) fuel, no precision data is available (see 14.1). For non-aviation fuels, a procedure for the determination of the heptane-insoluble portion of the residue is also described. CAUTION — This method is not intended for the testing of gasoline components, particularly those with a high percentage of low-boiling unsaturated compounds, as they can cause explosions during evaporation.
Abstract
Overview
SIST EN ISO 6246:2017/A1:2019 is an amendment to the international standard for determining the gum content of fuels using the jet evaporation method. Published by CEN in December 2019, this update introduces a purity requirement for n-heptane, a key solvent used in the testing process. This amendment ensures that the n-heptane used in the gum content test has a minimum purity of 99%, enhancing the accuracy and reliability of fuel quality assessments.
The standard, originally issued as ISO 6246:2017, addresses procedures relevant to petroleum products and their quality control, specifically focusing on the liquid fuels sector. By setting precise chemical purity benchmarks, SIST EN ISO 6246:2017/A1:2019 supports consistent testing practices across national markets in Europe and internationally.
Key Topics
- Jet evaporation method: A technique to measure gum content in fuel by evaporating the sample and assessing non-volatile residues.
- Gum content of fuels: A crucial parameter indicating the presence of deposits or residues that affect fuel stability and engine performance.
- Purity requirement for n-heptane: Specifies a minimum purity level of 99% for n-heptane to be used, minimizing contamination during testing and improving repeatability.
- Amendment A1: Modifies EN ISO 6246:2017, aligning national standards across the CEN member countries to this updated specification.
- Applicability to liquid fuels: Relevant for testing fuels such as gasoline and jet fuels, where gum content influences storage and engine safety parameters.
- Compliance and standardization: Indicates mandatory adoption by European countries by April 2020, ensuring harmonized fuel testing methods.
Applications
The standard and its amendment serve practical roles in numerous sectors associated with petroleum fuel production, distribution, and usage:
- Fuel quality control laboratories: Laboratories testing liquid fuels utilize this standard to measure gum content ensuring fuel purity and performance.
- Petroleum refining industry: Refineries apply these techniques for process control and to meet regulatory requirements on fuel composition.
- Fuel specification compliance: Helps manufacturers and suppliers verify that products meet international and national fuel standards, avoiding engine deposits and combustion issues.
- Aviation and transportation fuels: Applied for jet fuel certification to maintain engine reliability and safety.
- Research and development: Supports testing in innovation related to synthetic and bio-based liquid fuels by monitoring gum content.
- Regulatory bodies and standard organizations: Provides a uniform methodology for enforcement and standard harmonization across many countries.
Related Standards
SIST EN ISO 6246:2017/A1:2019 complements and integrates with a range of standards dealing with petroleum and liquid fuel testing, including:
- ISO 8217 - Liquid petroleum products - Fuels (class F) - Specifications of marine fuels
- EN ISO 9001 - Quality management systems - Requirements, for ensuring laboratory quality standards
- ISO 2719 - Petroleum products - Determination of flash point - Pensky-Martens closed cup method
- ISO 8754 - Gasoline and gasoline blending streams - Determination of final boiling point (FBP) by ASTM D86
- ISO/IEC 17025 - General requirements for the competence of testing and calibration laboratories, relevant for labs implementing EN ISO 6246.
By adhering to SIST EN ISO 6246:2017/A1:2019, stakeholders reinforce fuel quality and safety standards that directly impact engine longevity, emissions control, and compliance with environmental regulations. This amendment plays a crucial role in maintaining the integrity of jet evaporation gum content testing by setting a clear chemical purity criterion for the solvent employed.
