ISO 6272-1:2011 describes a method for evaluating the resistance of a dry film of paint, varnish or related product to cracking or peeling from a substrate when it is subjected to a deformation caused by a falling weight, with a 20-mm-diameter spherical indenter, dropped under standard conditions. NOTE The terms "impact" and "impact resistance" are used in the title and text of ISO 6272-1, but an important characteristic of the apparatus used is that it should produce rapid deformation rather than a true impact. The method described can be applied either as a pass/fail test, the test being carried out from one drop height and with a specified mass, so as to test compliance with a particular specification; or as a classification test, to determine, by gradually increasing the drop height and/or the mass, the minimum mass and/or drop height for which the coating cracks or peels from its substrate.
Abstract
Overview
EN ISO 6272-1:2011 - Paints and varnishes: Rapid-deformation (impact resistance) tests - Part 1: Falling-weight test, large-area indenter (ISO 6272-1:2011) specifies a laboratory method to evaluate a dry coating’s resistance to cracking or peeling when subjected to a rapid deformation produced by a falling weight. The test uses a 20 mm diameter spherical indenter and can be applied as a pass/fail check or as a classification test to determine the minimum drop height and/or mass that causes coating failure. Note: the apparatus produces rapid deformation rather than a true high‑velocity impact.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Principle: A coated test panel is deformed by a falling weight; visual inspection (×10 magnifier) reveals cracking or peeling.
- Apparatus essentials:
- Spherical indenter: (20 ± 0.3) mm diameter.
- Falling weights: nominally 1 000 ± 10 g or 2 000 ± 20 g (additional masses allowed up to 4 kg total).
- Vertical guide tube with clearance (0.7 ± 0.2) mm and graduation for drop height.
- Ring die: inner diameter (27 ± 0.3) mm, rounded upper edge radius (0.9 ± 0.2) mm, minimum height 20 mm.
- Clamping sleeve, stops to limit indentation depth, and a ×10 viewing lens.
- Test specimen & conditioning:
- Test panels: planar, ≥0.25 mm thick, conforming to ISO 1514.
- Coating thickness measured per ISO 2808; film thickness variation must be ≤ ±10% of specified value.
- Condition panels at (23 ± 2) °C and 50 ± 5% RH (or agreed alternative) for ≥16 h; begin tests promptly and complete within 30 minutes of removal from conditioning.
- Procedure:
- Pass/fail: five drops at specified mass/height; coating satisfactory if ≥4 of 5 positions show no cracking/peeling.
- Classification: increase drop height in 25 mm increments (and/or add mass) until failure is observed to determine threshold.
Applications and users
- Practical use: quality control, specification compliance, product development and comparative ranking of coatings for durability under rapid deformation.
- Typical users: coatings manufacturers, independent test laboratories, R&D teams, specifiers, procurement and QA personnel in industries such as industrial coatings, automotive, appliances, construction and metal fabrication where coated substrates may undergo mechanical deformation.
