ISO 6892-2:2018 specifies a method of tensile testing of metallic materials at temperatures higher than room temperature.
Abstract
Overview
EN ISO 6892-2:2018 - Metallic materials - Tensile testing - Part 2: Method of test at elevated temperature specifies a standardized method for performing tensile tests on metallic materials at temperatures above room temperature. Approved by CEN in May 2018, this edition supersedes EN ISO 6892-2:2011 and aligns with ISO 6892-2:2018. It defines test principles, specimen preparation, apparatus, test conditions (including heating and gripping), data reporting and measurement uncertainty for elevated-temperature tensile testing.
Key Topics
- Scope and purpose: Method for tensile testing of metallic materials at elevated temperatures to determine temperature-dependent mechanical behaviour.
- Test methods: Two testing-speed approaches are described:
- Method A - strain-rate control with narrow tolerances (±20%) to reduce variation and measurement uncertainty.
- Method B - conventional strain-rate ranges for applications requiring expanded rate ranges.
- Specimen and gauge length: Test piece geometries are generally based on room-temperature dimensions; special consideration is given to extensometer gauge length at elevated temperatures.
- Apparatus and calibration: Requirements reference calibration and verification standards for load cells and extensometers (see Related Standards).
- Test conditions: Procedures for setting force zero, gripping, fixing extensometer, heating sequence, and recommended strain rates for determining yield, proof, tensile strength and elongation characteristics.
- Properties typically not determined at elevated temperature: permanent set strength, percentage permanent elongation or extension, percentage yield point extension (Ae), percentage total extension at maximum force (Agt), and percentage plastic extension at maximum force (Ag), unless specifically required.
- Documentation and uncertainty: Test reporting requirements, documentation of chosen testing conditions, and guidance on measurement uncertainty and annex material (informative).
Applications
EN ISO 6892-2:2018 is applicable to:
- Materials and metallurgical testing laboratories conducting mechanical testing of metals at high temperatures.
- Quality assurance and certification bodies assessing temperature-dependent tensile properties for design and compliance.
- Engineers and designers validating material performance for high-temperature applications (e.g., power plants, aerospace, automotive exhaust systems, heat-treated components).
- Manufacturers specifying test conditions for product development or material acceptance.
Using this standard ensures consistent, reproducible tensile testing at elevated temperature, enabling reliable comparison of data across laboratories and suppliers.
Related Standards
- ISO 6892-1 - Tensile testing at room temperature (normative reference).
- ISO 7500-1 - Calibration and verification of force-measuring systems in testing machines.
- ISO 9513 - Calibration of extensometer systems used in uniaxial testing.
