This document a) defines single-number quantities for impact sound insulation in buildings and of floors, b) gives rules for determining these quantities from the results of measurements carried out in one-third-octave bands in accordance with ISO 10140-3 and ISO 16283-2, and in octave bands in accordance with that option in ISO 16283-2 for field measurements only, c) defines single-number quantities for the impact sound reduction of floor coverings and floating floors calculated from the results of measurements carried out in accordance with ISO 10140-3, and d) specifies a procedure for evaluating the weighted reduction in impact sound pressure level by floor coverings on lightweight floors. The single-number quantities in accordance with this document are intended for rating impact sound insulation and for simplifying the formulation of acoustical requirements in building codes. An additional single-number evaluation in steps of 0,1 dB is indicated where it is needed for the expression of uncertainty (except for spectrum adaptation terms). Numerical values of the single-number quantities are specified where required for calculations. The rating of measurements over an enlarged frequency range is given in Annex A. A method for obtaining single-number quantities for bare heavy floors according to their performance in combination with floor coverings is given in Annex B. Example calculations of single-number quantities are given in Annex C. The rating of measurements with a heavy and soft impact source (rubber ball) is given in Annex D.
Abstract
Overview
EN ISO 717-2:2020 - Acoustics: Impact sound insulation specifies how to convert frequency‑dependent impact sound measurement results into standardized single‑number ratings for buildings and building elements. It defines the single‑number quantities used to rate impact (footstep) sound, gives the rules to derive them from laboratory and field measurements, and provides procedures for evaluating how floor coverings and floating floors reduce impact sound. This document is part of the ISO 717 series and is intended to simplify acoustic requirements in building codes and specifications.
Key topics and requirements
- Single‑number quantities: Defines the single‑number rating for impact sound insulation as the value of a reference curve at 500 Hz after the required shifting and then reduced by 5 dB (per the standard definition). An additional evaluation in 0.1 dB steps is indicated when needed to express measurement uncertainty.
- Measurement input bands: Rules for deriving ratings from frequency‑dependent results measured in one‑third‑octave bands (ISO 10140-3, ISO 16283-2) and from octave bands when octave‑band field measurements are used (as allowed in ISO 16283-2).
- Floor coverings and floating floors: Defines single‑number quantities for impact sound reduction produced by coverings or floating floors based on ISO 10140-3 laboratory results and specifies calculation procedures.
- Weighted reduction for lightweight floors: A dedicated procedure to evaluate how coverings reduce impact sound on lightweight floor constructions.
- Spectrum adaptation term (CI): Defines how to account for the unweighted impact sound spectrum (typical walking noise) by applying a spectrum adaptation term where relevant.
- Annexes:
- Annex A: Rating over an enlarged frequency range (informative)
- Annex B: Method for bare heavy floors in combination with coverings (informative)
- Annex C: Example calculations (informative)
- Annex D: Rating method for heavy and soft impact sources (normative) - new in this edition
Practical applications and users
- Who uses it: Acoustical consultants, building acoustics engineers, test laboratories, manufacturers of floor systems and floor coverings, architects, and authorities writing building codes and specifications.
- Use cases:
- Producing standardized impact sound ratings for product data sheets and comparison.
- Specifying acoustic performance requirements in building contracts and codes.
- Converting laboratory or field measurement results into single‑number values for compliance checks and design decisions.
- Evaluating the effectiveness of floor coverings or floating floors on different supporting constructions.
