The standard provides rules, graphical symbols and enumeration practices to give each specification a unique identifier so stakeholders across design, manufacturing and inspection can unambiguously reference requirements.

Unique identifiers: Every specification in a TPD shall have a unique TPD identifier and a specification identifier (Clauses 4–7).

Specification indication identifiers (Clause 5):

Enumeration order is organisation-defined (e.g., view order, left‑to‑right/top‑to‑bottom); leading zeros are recommended to avoid ambiguous searches.
Graphic placement: inline adjacent area for GPS specifications; before/after for text specifications.
In model‑based definitions identifiers may appear in metadata, on the drawing, or both.

Specification identifiers (Clauses 6–7):

Rules for different specification types (surface texture, size, population) and for applying identifiers to repeated or compound features.
When a single indication covers multiple specifications or features, derived identifiers are used per the clauses.
