ISO 8611-3:2011 specifies the determination of maximum working load for new flat pallets with known payloads in different handling environments. It is not intended to apply to pallets with a fixed superstructure or a rigid, self-supporting container that can be mechanically attached to the pallet and which contributes to the strength of the pallet.

EN ISO 8611-3:2012 governs the determination of maximum working loads for new flat pallets used in materials handling when the payload is known. It complements the ISO 8611 series by defining how to establish the greatest payload a pallet may carry under specific support and handling conditions (racking, stacking, conveyors, forklifts, sling support). It does not apply to pallets that rely on a fixed superstructure or a rigid, self-supporting container that contributes to pallet strength.

Stacking without racking - stacking and deck stiffness tests.
Handling without racking or stacking - applicable bending/deck tests.
Special tests: twin-track conveyors, sling under wings, bottom-deck bending as required.

Acceptance criteria: Maximum deflection under payload must not exceed the deflection at ½ U (half the ultimate load) from corresponding ISO 8611-1 tests (U1, U2, U4). Safety factor guidance in ISO 8611 series: safety factor ≥ 2.0.

Practical test direction: Test pallets in the direction(s) of intended use; determine the weaker direction if support differs by orientation.

Limitations: Not for pallets augmented by rigid containers/superstructures that affect strength.

Applications and practical value

Establish safe working payloads for pallet selection and procurement.

Compare pallet designs by maximum working load for specific warehouse systems (racking, stacking, conveyors).

Support pallet design verification and certification before commercial use.

Inform warehouse operators, packaging engineers and logistics planners about pallet suitability for intended modes of handling.

Provide objective data for safety, risk assessment and load planning.
