This International Standard specifies two methods, using gas chromatography, of measuring the residual phenol content of phenolic resins.
Abstract
Overview
EN ISO 8974:2002 - Plastics: Phenolic resins - Determination of residual phenol content by gas chromatography (ISO 8974:2002) specifies two gas‑chromatographic methods for measuring residual phenol in phenolic resins. The standard defines sample preparation, recommended reagents and solvents, chromatographic apparatus and operating ranges, calibration procedures and how to calculate results (response factor, mass ratio and peak area ratio). It is a harmonized CEN/ISO document intended for quality control and testing laboratories.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Two methods:
- Method A (reference): internal standard weighed into each test portion.
- Method B (routine): use of a stock internal‑standard solution for faster routine analysis.
- Analytical principle: dissolve a test portion in a suitable solvent and determine phenol by gas chromatography with a flame ionization detector (FID).
- Reagents and solvents:
- Carrier gas: hydrogen, nitrogen or helium (chromatographic grade) - helium or nitrogen recommended for safety.
- Detector gases: hydrogen and compressed air.
- Internal standards: chemically pure, inert substances not present in resins (examples: 1‑octanol, 1‑undecanol; 1‑octanol especially recommended).
- Solvents: acetone (recommended), methanol, ethanol - must dissolve sample and internal standard and be column‑compatible.
- Apparatus & conditions:
- Any GC with FID; injector temperature typically 180–250 °C (≈50 °C above phenol boiling point); detector 230–300 °C.
- Injection volume: 0.5–1 µl (microsyringe).
- Use a precolumn/insert to trap non‑volatile constituents; column choice (packed, megabore, capillary) depends on required resolution.
- Capillary columns enable detection of residual phenol contents below 0.5% by mass.
- Calibration:
- Prepare at least six calibration solutions with mass ratios of phenol:internal standard between 3:1 and 1:3.
- Plot peak area ratio vs mass ratio, derive response factor to convert measured peak areas to mass ratios.
- Reporting: standard gives guidance on expression of results, precision and the content of the test report.
Applications
- Quality control and batch release testing of phenolic resins used in adhesives, coatings, moulded parts and laminates.
- Process control and formulation development where residual phenol affects performance, cure or safety.
- Compliance testing for product specifications and regulatory/health assessments related to residual monomer content.
Who uses this standard
- Resin manufacturers and formulators
- Analytical and contract testing laboratories
- R&D and quality assurance teams in plastics and adhesives industries
- Regulatory bodies requiring validated test methods
