ISO 9311-2:2011 specifies a method for the determination of the shear strength of joints made with adhesives for thermoplastic piping systems.
Abstract
Overview
EN ISO 9311-2:2011 (ISO 9311-2:2011) defines a standardized laboratory method to determine the shear strength of joints bonded with adhesives for thermoplastic piping systems. The standard provides specimen preparation, conditioning, test apparatus and procedure, data reporting and calculation methods so manufacturers, test labs and specifiers can consistently evaluate adhesive performance for thermoplastic pipes and fittings.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope: Method for measuring shear strength of adhesive-bonded joints for thermoplastic piping; results are intended for material characterization and comparison, not direct extrapolation to every in-service situation.
- Specimen preparation:
- Five test assemblies per test.
- Typical assembly: pipe length 75 mm, external diameter 40 mm; joint contact depth ≥ 20 mm.
- Diametrical clearance must be produced on the fitting (lathe), not by machining the pipe external diameter.
- Prepare contact surfaces per adhesive manufacturer instructions; remove swarf/debris.
- Conditioning and curing:
- Condition at (23 ± 2) °C and (50 ± 5) % RH for at least 6 h before bonding.
- Maintain curing at the same conditions; specimens vertical during cure unless product standard specifies otherwise.
- Test apparatus and procedure:
- Tensile/press testing machine with jaw movement (5 ± 0.5) mm/min.
- Jigs illustrated for full or reduced bonded area, and for pressing devices.
- Record maximum force causing failure. If the load exceeds machine capacity, reduce bonded area by cutting a 10 mm ring before the setting time ends.
- Calculation and reporting:
- Shear strength Fs (MPa) = F / (π · d · l), where F = failure force (N), d = internal diameter of fitting (mm), l = joint length (mm).
- Report individual results, arithmetic mean of five assemblies; do not discard results without documented justification.
- Safety/environment: Follow normal lab safety practice; dispose of wastes per local regulation. The standard notes some materials may have environmental impacts.
Applications and users
EN ISO 9311-2 is used for:
- Quality control and batch testing by adhesive manufacturers.
- Product development and R&D to compare adhesive formulations.
- Testing laboratories performing adhesive qualification for thermoplastic pipe systems.
- Pipe and fitting manufacturers validating adhesive compatibility and joint strength.
- Specifiers and certification bodies requiring standardized shear strength data for specifications and approvals.
