This standard specifies essential requirements, ranges of approval, test conditions, acceptance requirements and certification for the approval testing of welder performance for the welding of copper. This standard applies to the approval testing of welders for the fusion welding of copper. This standard is intended to provide the basis for the mutual recognition by examining bodies for approval relating to welders' competence in the various fields of application. Tests will be carried out in accordance with this standard unless more severe tests are specified by the relevant application standard when these are applied. During the approval test the welder should be required to show adequate practical experience and job knowledge (test non mandatory) of the welding processes, materials and safety requirements for which he is to be approved; information on these aspects is given in Annex A. This standard is applicable when the welder's approval testing is required by the purchaser, by inspection authorities or by other organizations. The welding processes referred to in this standard include those fusion welding processes which are designated as manual or partly mechanized welding. It does not cover fully mechanized and automatic processes (see 5.2). This standard covers approval testing of welders for work on semi-finished and finished products made from wrought, forged or cast material types listed in 5.4. The certificate of approval testing is issued under the sole responsibility of the examiner or examining body.
Abstract
Overview
EN ISO 9606-3:1999 - Approval testing of welders - Fusion welding - Part 3: Copper and copper alloys - sets out the essential requirements for qualifying welders to carry out fusion welding on copper materials. The standard defines the scope of approval testing, test conditions, acceptance criteria, ranges of approval and certification rules to ensure consistent welder competence and mutual recognition by examining bodies.
Key topics and requirements
- Scope of testing: Applies to fusion welding of copper and copper alloys on semi‑finished and finished products made from wrought, forged or cast materials (as listed in the standard).
- Test elements: Specifies essential requirements, test specimens, test conditions, and acceptance requirements for welder approval testing.
- Ranges of approval: Defines the permitted ranges (positions, thicknesses, materials, processes) under which a qualified welder may be certified.
- Processes covered: Intended for fusion welding processes designated as manual or partly mechanized; fully mechanized and automatic processes are excluded.
- Certification and responsibility: Certificates of approval are issued under the sole responsibility of the examiner or examining body.
- Mutual recognition: Designed to provide a basis for mutual recognition of welder approvals among examining bodies; application standards may require more severe tests where applicable.
- Practical experience and job knowledge: During testing, a welder may be required to demonstrate practical experience and job knowledge of welding processes, materials and safety requirements (guidance on this is provided in Annex A; demonstration may be non‑mandatory depending on the examining body).
Practical applications and users
This standard is used when welder approval testing is required by:
- Purchasers specifying qualified welding personnel for copper fabrication
- Inspection authorities and regulatory bodies
- Manufacturers and fabricators of copper components and assemblies
- Examination and certification bodies conducting welder qualification tests
- Training centers and vocational programs preparing welders for certification
Typical applications include plumbing and HVAC components, electrical conductors and connectors, industrial components and assemblies made from copper and copper alloys where consistent welding quality and traceable welder competence are required.
Related standards and notes
- EN ISO 9606-3:1999 is part of the ISO 9606 series for welder qualification; other parts address welding of different materials and contexts.
- Where relevant application standards exist, they may supersede or require more stringent tests than those in EN ISO 9606-3.
Keywords: EN ISO 9606-3, approval testing of welders, fusion welding, copper and copper alloys, welder certification, welding qualification, manual welding, partly mechanized welding.
