This standard specifies essential requirements, ranges of approval, test conditions, acceptance requirements and certification for the approval testing of welder performance for the welding of nickel. This standard applies to the approval testing of welders for the fusion welding of nickel. This standard is intended to provide the basis for the mutual recognition by examining bodies for approval relating to welders' competence in the various fields of application. Tests will be carried out in accordance with this standard unless more severe tests are specified by the relevant application standard when these are applied. During the approval test the welder should be required to show adequate practical experience and job knowledge (test non mandatory) of the welding processes, materials and safety requirements for which he is to be approved; information on these aspects is given in Annex A. This standard is applicable when the welder's approval testing is required by the purchaser, by inspection authorities or by other organizations. The welding processes referred to in this standard include those fusion welding processes which are designated as manual or partly mechanized welding. It does not cover fully mechanized and automatic processes (see 5.2). This standard covers approval testing of welders for work on semi-finished and finished products made from wrought, forged or cast material types listed in 5.4. The certificate of approval testing is issued under the sole responsibility of the examiner or examining body.
Abstract
Overview
SIST EN ISO 9606-4:1999 specifies the essential requirements for the approval testing of welders engaged in fusion welding of nickel and nickel alloys. Issued by the Slovenski inštitut za standardizacijo (SIST), this international standard defines the approval process, test conditions, and certification necessary to demonstrate welder competence in nickel welding operations. By providing a structured framework for assessment, the standard fosters mutual recognition among examining bodies and helps ensure high-quality welds in critical applications.
Key Topics
- Welding Processes Covered: The standard applies to manual and partly mechanized fusion welding processes for nickel and nickel alloys. Fully mechanized and automatic welding operations are excluded.
- Scope of Approval: It establishes ranges of approval, detailing which welding parameters and joint types qualify under a successful test.
- Test Conditions: Includes requirements related to materials (wrought, forged, or cast), product form (semi-finished or finished), and execution of test pieces.
- Acceptance Criteria: Sets acceptance requirements for visual examination and, if appropriate, additional testing of the welded samples.
- Certification Procedure: The standard outlines the certification process, with the certification issued under the authority of the examiner or examining body.
- Practical Knowledge: Welder performance testing may also assess job knowledge regarding welding processes, characteristics of nickel alloys, and safety precautions, as elaborated in Annex A.
Applications
The approval testing detailed in SIST EN ISO 9606-4:1999 is crucial wherever welders are required to demonstrate their ability to produce sound welds on nickel and nickel alloy components. Typical applications include:
- Industrial Sectors:
- Petrochemical and chemical processing
- Aerospace engineering
- Power generation
- Marine and offshore industries
- Quality Assurance: Used by purchasers, inspection authorities, and regulatory organizations to evaluate and certify welder performance.
- Personnel Qualification: Supports human resources management in welding operations by providing objective assessment benchmarks.
- Safety-Critical Products: Ensures the competence of welders working on components where material integrity and safe operation depend on high-quality fusion welds.
Practical Value
- Consistent Assessment: The standard facilitates uniform welder qualification across organizations and countries, helping employers meet both regulatory and customer-specific requirements.
- Risk Reduction: By setting out clear acceptance and testing procedures, SIST EN ISO 9606-4:1999 helps reduce the risk of welding-related failures in high-stress or safety-sensitive environments.
- Global Recognition: Certifications achieved under this standard are designed for mutual recognition by examining bodies, streamlining the process for welders working internationally.
Related Standards
To ensure comprehensive welder qualification and safety in fusion welding, consider referencing:
