Overview
ISO 10245-2:2014 - "Cranes - Limiting and indicating devices - Part 2: Mobile cranes" specifies requirements for devices that limit and/or indicate loads, motions, performance and environment of mobile cranes. It complements the general requirements in ISO 10245‑1 and applies to all mobile cranes as defined in ISO 4306‑2. The standard is intended for new mobile cranes manufactured one year after publication and guides design, testing, inspection and operation of safety- and performance-related devices (rated capacity systems, motion limiters, indicators, event recorders and data loggers).
Key topics and technical requirements
- Rated capacity limiter: must automatically override controls to prevent overloads and dangerous movements (e.g., derricking out/in, hoisting, telescoping out). Set and tested to operate between 100 % and 110 % of rated capacity, accounting for sensor tolerances.
- Rated capacity indicator: provides visual and acoustic warnings of approach to rated capacity, starting between 90 % and 97.5 % of rated capacity; must indicate when the limiter overrides controls.
- Load indicator: measures and displays net or hoist medium load; accuracy required such that indicated load is between 100 % and 110 % of actual load when load exceeds 75 % of rated capacity.
- Motion limiters and indicators: requirements for hoisting, lowering, derrick limits, attachment angle/length, radius, rope drum rotation, crane level and slew indicators. Motion limiters should be coupled to controls to prevent further unsafe movement.
- Anti-two-block / two-block damage prevention: defined device behaviors to prevent block contact and reduce rope pull to avoid damage.
- Event recorder and data logger: requirements for recording operational events and data for inspection, maintenance and incident investigation.
- Design, inspection and maintenance: includes guidance on configuration selection, operator acknowledgement, inspection intervals, and maintenance in line with ISO 9927‑1 and ISO 9926‑1.
Applications
- Design and integration of safety systems in mobile cranes (OEMs and system integrators)
- Factory acceptance testing, commissioning and functional verification of limiting/indicating devices
- Safety and compliance checks by inspectors, operators and fleet managers
- Specifying retrofitting or component upgrades: the standard does not mandate retrofitting but requires review when components are modified; recommended corrective actions should be implemented by the owner within one year.
- Operator training and development of operating instructions tied to limiter/indicator functions.
Who should use this standard
- Crane manufacturers and OEMs
- Safety and compliance engineers
- Inspection and maintenance organizations
- Crane operators, fleet managers and procurement teams
- Regulators and certification bodies
