Overview
ISO 15707:2022 - Information and documentation - International Standard Musical Work Code (ISWC) defines a standardized, internationally recognized identifier for musical works. The ISWC uniquely identifies a musical work (an intangible creation) within computer databases and documentation, supporting rights administration, metadata exchange and interoperable cataloguing across collecting societies, publishers, digital platforms and other stakeholders.
Key topics and technical requirements
- ISWC structure: A prefix element (default letter T), a 9‑digit work identifier (range 000000001–999999999) and a single check digit. When displayed, the letters “ISWC” precede the code (example: ISWC T-034.524.680-1). Hyphens and dots may be used for readability.
- Check digit: Calculated using a weighted modulus 10 algorithm (weights 1–9); Annex B describes the computation method and example.
- Registration authority: A designated registration authority administers allocation, supervision and the ISWC database (see ISO maintenance_agencies for details). Delegation to registration agencies is supported.
- Descriptive metadata: Each ISWC must be associated with metadata recorded in the registration database. Minimum metadata includes:
- at least one original title;
- all creators with roles;
- derivation status and source work ISWCs or titles for derived works.
Annex C and the registration authority manual describe required metadata fields and formats.
- Allocation rules: ISWCs may be assigned to published or unpublished works, new or existing, including modified versions, excerpts and composite works. Once allocated, an ISWC is never reused for a different work.
- Digital association: ISWC may be linked to digital expressions (e.g., via watermarking/encryption) to assist usage tracking.
