Abstract
Overview
ISO 16200-1:2001 - Workplace air quality - provides guidance for the pumped sampling method for measuring volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in air using solvent desorption and gas chromatography (GC). Part 1 describes the sampling principle, recommended sorbents, desorption solvents, calibration approaches, analytical detection (e.g. FID, MS), and quality control practices for occupational and environmental monitoring. It is one part of ISO 16200 (Part 2 covers diffusive sampling).
Key Topics and Requirements
- Sampling principle: Draw a measured volume of air through one or more sorbent tubes; desorb retained VOCs with solvent and analyze by GC.
- Sorbents: Recommendations include activated coconut‑shell charcoal (preconditioned; heated ~600 °C for 1 h before packing) and alternative sorbents (see Annex A). Sorbent selection depends on compound polarity and volatility.
- Desorption solvents: Carbon disulfide is commonly recommended for non‑polar compounds. Alternatives or modifiers (dichloromethane, methanol, dimethylformamide, acetonitrile) may be used for polar analytes or mixtures.
- Analytical range & limits: Usable range depends on sampled volume, sorptive capacity and GC linearity. Examples: a 10 L air sample corresponds roughly to 1 mg/m3–1000 mg/m3 per compound; a 1 L sample corresponds roughly to 10 mg/m3–10 000 mg/m3 per compound.
- Compound classes: Hydrocarbons, halogenated hydrocarbons, esters, glycol ethers, ketones, alcohols. Very polar compounds may require derivatization; very low‑boilers may be only partially retained; semi‑volatiles may be incompletely recovered.
- Calibration and QA: Procedures for preparing calibration blends and desorption efficiency standards; traceability to national standards; guidance on blank levels, storage and transport, and breakthrough volume determination (Annex C).
- Documentation: Reporting requirements, precision/bias considerations and interference guidance are included.
