This document describes the determination of the residue (ash content) on ignition of paper, board, pulps and cellulose nanomaterials at 525 °C. It is applicable to all types of paper, board, pulp and cellulose nanomaterial samples. This document provides measurement procedures to obtain a measurement precision of 0,01 % or better for residue (ash content) on ignition at 525 °C. Determination of residue (ash content) on ignition at 900 °C of paper, board, pulps and cellulose nanomaterials is described in ISO 2144. In the context of this document, the term "cellulose nanomaterial" refers specifically to cellulose nano-object (see 3.2 to 3.4). Owing to their nanoscale dimensions, these cellulose nano-objects can have intrinsic properties, behaviours or functionalities that are distinct from those associated with paper, board and pulps.
Abstract
Overview
SIST ISO 1762:2023 specifies a standardized method for determining the residue, commonly known as ash content, in paper, board, pulps, and cellulose nanomaterials through ignition at 525 °C. This testing standard is vital for quality control and product specification in pulp, paper, and nanocellulose industries. The procedure ensures a measurement precision of 0.01% or better, enabling manufacturers and laboratories to accurately assess inorganic content in a wide range of cellulose-based materials.
This document is applicable to all types of paper, board, pulp, and cellulose nanomaterial samples, making it broadly useful in various industrial and research settings. The ash content can reveal the presence of fillers, pigments, contaminants, and process additives, which is essential information for both raw material and finished product assessments.
Key Topics
- Ash Content Determination: The method involves weighing a test sample, igniting it at 525 °C, and determining the proportion of inorganic residue relative to the dry mass.
- Applicability to Cellulose Nanomaterials: Includes detailed considerations for sampling and testing advanced nanomaterials, which have unique properties and handling requirements due to their nanoscale dimensions.
- Measurement Precision: Procedures are designed for high precision (0.01% or better), supporting even stringent quality standards.
- Sample Preparation: Covers representative sampling techniques for paper, board, pulps, and specific preparation steps for cellulose nanomaterials to ensure valid results.
- Result Reporting: Outlines requirements for test reports, including reference to the standard, sample identification, testing details, and notes on any procedural deviations.
Applications
SIST ISO 1762:2023 is used throughout the paper and pulp supply chain, from raw materials to end products:
- Quality Control: Routine batch testing to ensure product consistency in paper, board, pulp, and nanocellulose production.
- Raw Material Evaluation: Certification and qualification of incoming pulps or fillers in manufacturing facilities.
- Research & Development: Characterizing new materials, especially cellulose nanomaterials, to understand their inorganic content and its effect on properties.
- Compliance & Audit: Verifying that products meet regulatory and contractual specifications for ash content.
- Troubleshooting & Process Improvement: Identifying sources of contamination or off-specification raw materials that affect performance and quality.
For advanced applications, such as cellulose nanomaterials, the standard provides additional instructions on handling, drying, and compacting samples to address their unique properties. This ensures the accuracy and reliability of test results even for next-generation bio-based materials.
Related Standards
To ensure full compliance and comprehensive testing, the following standards are commonly referenced alongside SIST ISO 1762:2023:
- ISO 2144: Describes residue (ash content) determination by ignition at the higher temperature of 900 °C, suitable for different analytical needs.
- ISO 186: Provides guidance for sampling paper and board to determine average quality.
- ISO 287: Specifies the oven-drying method for determining moisture content in paper and board.
- ISO 638: Covers determination of dry matter content for paper, board, and pulps.
- ISO 7213: Sampling guidelines specific to pulps.
- ISO/TS 20477: Terminology and definitions for cellulose nanomaterials, essential for ensuring consistency in nanomaterials testing.
- TAPPI T 211: Industry-standard method for ash in wood, pulp, paper, and paperboard by combustion at 525 °C.
By adhering to SIST ISO 1762:2023 and related standards, organizations can improve product quality, demonstrate compliance, and foster innovation in the development and use of cellulose-based materials, including emerging nanocellulose applications.
