ISO 22915-9:2014 specifies the tests for verifying the stability of counterbalanced trucks with masts when handling empty or laden freight containers of 6 m (20 ft) length and longer. It is applicable to these types of industrial trucks that are equipped with forks, a spreader, (top lift and side lift), or other load handling means applicable for container handling. It does not apply to trucks when handling a container which has a mobile centre of gravity (see ISO 3874).
Abstract
Overview
ISO 22915-9:2014 - Industrial trucks - Verification of stability - Part 9 specifies stability verification tests for counterbalanced trucks with mast when handling freight containers of 6 m (20 ft) length and longer. It defines test conditions, load and wind-force simulation, tilt-table positioning and lift heights to confirm safe handling of empty or laden long containers. The standard excludes containers with a mobile centre of gravity (see ISO 3874).
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and applicability: Applies to trucks equipped with forks, spreaders (top- and side-lift) or other container-handling attachments for 6 m (20 ft) containers and longer.
- Operating conditions: Tests account for normal eccentric container loading and permit operation up to a rated wind speed of 12.2 m/s (adjustable for higher-design wind speeds).
- Wind-force calculation:
- Longitudinal wind force: formula using air density (ρ = 1.225 kg/m3), container height 2.90 m and shape coefficient Cf1 = 1.3.
- Lateral wind force: formula with shape coefficient Cf2 = 0.8, container width 2.44 m and angle of lateral tipping axis.
- Test load composition: Test load = container mass (laden or unladen, acting through its centre of gravity) plus simulated wind force applied either horizontally through the load CG or as an equivalent vertical moment.
- Tilt-table positioning: Detailed placement of load and steer axles relative to the tilt axis for longitudinal, lateral and turning stability tests. Specific tests require wheels to remain in contact (no loss of contact on tests 4 and 5).
- Lift heights and visibility:
- Travel with container: load CG positioned 2 350 mm above the seat index point (SIP) unless manufacturer-specified visibility allows otherwise.
- Partially elevated container: bottom no higher than 900 mm above SIP.
- Travel without container: fork heel heights specified (300 mm for ≤10 t, 500 mm for >10 t rated capacity).
- Marking: The capacity for container handling determined by these tests must be shown on the truck’s capacity plate; wind speed values exceeding 12.2 m/s must be indicated.
Applications and users
- Used by truck manufacturers, design engineers and testing laboratories for type-testing and design validation of container-handling counterbalanced trucks.
- Referenced by safety engineers, certification bodies and fleet owners for conformity assessment, procurement specifications and operational limits (wind-speed restrictions, rated capacities).
- Useful in preparing test protocols for stability verification and documenting capacity and safe-use limits.
