This document establishes a set of basic writing rules, called “basic principles and methodology for stylistic guidelines (BSG)”, for writing in English that can be applied to other languages, facilitating communication in each language and from a language to other languages. It includes conceptual writing rules as well as specific grammar ones. This document is designed to facilitate written communication in English for native and non-native English speakers. It allows English native and non-English native speakers to smoothly communicate through social media or email using English, or to translate into their local language. Furthermore, this document is applicable to the languages of each community. In other words, it aims to promote bi-directional communication between two particular languages.
Abstract
Overview
SIST ISO 24620-4:2024 - Language Resource Management - Controlled Human Communication (CHC) - Part 4: Basic Principles and Methodology for Stylistic Guidelines (BSG) is an international standard developed by ISO, focusing on establishing basic writing rules for effective, clear, and easily translatable communication. The guidelines, though framed in English, are applicable to other languages, supporting both monolingual and multilingual environments. This document is particularly valuable for native and non-native English speakers aiming for understandable written communication-facilitating tasks such as email writing, social media posts, documentation, and translation. Through foundational and practical stylistic guidance, the standard promotes bi-directional communication between languages and communities.
Key Topics
- Basic Writing Principles: Sets out unified guidelines for writing that can be adapted across languages.
- Plain and Controlled Language: Emphasizes using easy-to-understand, non-ambiguous language for wider accessibility.
- 3C Rules: Encourages communication that is clear, correct, and concise.
- Sentence and Paragraph Structure: Recommends writing short sentences, organizing content logically, and focusing on one topic per paragraph.
- Vocabulary Use: Guides the selection of specific, unambiguous terms, discouraging synonyms and phrasal verbs with multiple meanings.
- Bi-directional Communication: Aims to support not only English communication but also translation and localization efforts for other languages.
Applications
The practical applications of SIST ISO 24620-4:2024 span various domains where clarity and precision in written language are critical:
- Technical Documentation: Ensures technical content is easily understood by an international readership and is ready for machine or human translation.
- Business Communication: Facilitates clear emails, reports, and collaborative communication among global teams.
- Social Media & Public Information: Helps organizations craft messages that are accessible to both native and non-native speakers, reducing misunderstanding in global communication.
- Localization & Internationalization: Serves as a foundational tool for adapting content for different markets, making content translation more accurate and less prone to error.
- Education & Training: Provides a reference for teaching plain English principles, especially for learners or professionals in multilingual settings.
- Terminology Management: Assists organizations in maintaining consistent use of terminology, which is key for effective knowledge transfer and reducing ambiguity.
Related Standards
SIST ISO 24620-4:2024 aligns with and complements several other international standards in the field of language resource management and technical communication:
- ISO 24183: Technical communication principles and practices.
- ISO 24495-1: Defines plain language and its use in clear communication.
- ASD-STE100: A standard for controlled English in technical documentation.
- ISO/TC 37 series: Standards concerning language, terminology, and language resource management.
Recognizing similarities and interfaces with controlled languages, plain languages, internationalization, and localization practices, SIST ISO 24620-4:2024 provides a flexible methodology applicable not only for English but for structuring guidelines in any language.
