The specified method is suitable for use either as a means of comparing different finishing systems or as a quality control test to ensure that a specified performance level is achieved or maintained. The tests are carried out on panels of the same materials and finished in the identical manner as the finished furniture of a size sufficient to meet the requirements of the test. The degree of damage to the test area is assessed by reference to a descriptive numerical rating code.

Test panel: flat, prepared and finished as per the final furniture, preferably ≥ 120 mm × 140 mm.

Drop heights: series of specified heights (10, 25, 50, 100, 200 and 400 mm) with five impacts per height. Each impact point must be ≥ 20 mm from panel edges and from other impacts.

Conditioning: panels and, for commercial products, finishes should be aged and conditioned (the standard specifies aging and conditioning regimes prior to testing and testing at 23 ± 2 °C, 50 ± 5 % RH).

Assessment:

Visual examination under direct light while varying the light angle 0–30°; use magnification to detect cracks.
Use a descriptive numerical code to classify damage (examples: no visible change; surface cracking limited to impact mark; cracks extending beyond mark; flaking/peeling).
Measure and report the mean impact‑mark diameter (average of five tests) and the mean rating for each drop height.

Reporting: include standard reference, panel/substrate and finish details, drop heights, reported values, test result vs. specification, deviations and date.
