ISO 5496:2006 describes several types of method for determining the aptitude of assessors and for training assessors to identify and describe odoriferous products. Conduct tests in rooms meeting ISO 8589 design guidance.
Remove background odours (ventilation), limit assessor fatigue (recommend ≤10 substances per session), and ensure assessors have not conducted other odor tests within 20 minutes prior.

Interpretation and selection: Clauses provide guidance for initiation, progressive training and assessor selection based on measured aptitude (see Clause 8 and Annexes B–C for answer forms and retro-nasal procedures).

Exclusions: Use of olfactometers for initiation/training is not covered.
