Overview
ISO 8144-1:1995 - Thermal insulation - Mineral wool mats for ventilated roof spaces - Part 1: Specification for applications with restricted ventilation - defines the specification for bonded mineral wool mats (batts and rolls) intended for use in ventilated roof spaces where ventilation may be restricted. The standard sets required properties, acceptable tolerances and test/reporting practices so products remain dimensionally stable and retain thermal performance under normal roof temperature and humidity conditions.
Key topics and requirements
- Scope and product form: Bonded mineral wool mats supplied as batts or rolls; may be flat, folded or rolled. Factory-applied facings may be supplied but are not covered by this Part.
- Declared properties: Manufacturers must declare nominal length, width, thickness, area, thermal resistance (R) or thermal conductivity (λ) and mean test temperature.
- Thermal performance: Test/declared R and λ values and rules for converting to design values. The standard requires the thermal resistance to be at least 95% of the declared R; thermal conductivity not to exceed declared λ.
- Dimensional tolerances: Measured length, width, thickness and squareness tolerances are specified (see Annex A for measurement procedures). Thickness measurements use a 200 mm pressure plate (50 Pa) and pin penetration to determine mean thickness.
- Mechanical and handling properties: Mats must have sufficient handling strength. Test method (Annex B) requires specimens to support twice the mass of the mat or twice the mass of a 10 m specimen, whichever is less.
- General properties: Requirements include even fibre distribution, absence of coarse extraneous material and objectionable odours; no fungal growth; no acceleration of corrosion on contacting metals.
- Conformity and marking: Sampling and conformity control procedures (Annex D) and recommended third‑party certification (Annex F). Required marking information includes manufacturer, product designation, origin, production code, nominal dimensions, declared R/λ and reference to ISO 8144-1.
- Annex structure: Annexes A–C normative (measurement/test methods); Annexes D–F informative (sampling, assessment, certification).
Applications
- Specification and acceptance criteria for thermal insulation used in ventilated roof spaces with restricted ventilation.
- Selection and quality control for building envelope designers, roof system specifiers, insulation manufacturers, test laboratories, building contractors and compliance authorities.
- Useful for product performance comparison, procurement specifications and certification of mineral wool mats for residential and commercial roofs.
