Specifies a set of 191 coded graphic characters identified as Latin alphabet No. 1. This set of coded graphic chacracters is intended for use in data and text processing applications and also for information interchange.

Character repertoire: Specifies 191 non‑combining graphic characters (letters, digits, punctuation, special symbols including SPACE, NO‑BREAK SPACE and SOFT HYPHEN) mapped to code table positions and Unicode code points (U+00xx).
8‑bit single‑byte structure: Characters are represented by single bytes (16×16 code table); bit notation and hexadecimal position conventions are defined.
Conformance rules:
- Information interchange: A coded‑character‑data‑element conforms if it meets clause 6 requirements.
- Device conformance: Originating devices must allow users to supply any sequence from clause 6 and transmit coded representations; receiving devices must interpret and present received coded characters so users can identify them.
Usage constraints:
- Intended for general office environments and specific languages (e.g., Albanian, Basque, Catalan, Danish, Dutch, English, Finnish, French, German, Icelandic, Italian, Norwegian, Portuguese, Spanish, Swedish, etc.).
- Not designed to be combined with other ISO/IEC 8859 parts directly; if mixing parts, use ISO/IEC 10367 within an ISO/IEC 4873 multi‑level environment.
Control functions: May be used in conjunction with ISO/IEC 6429 control functions; however control codes must not be used to create composite graphic symbols.
Naming and identifiers: Character names and unique identifiers are drawn from ISO/IEC 10646‑1.
