IEC 60034-12:2016 specifies the parameters for eight designs of starting performance of single-speed three-phase 50 Hz or 60 Hz cage induction motors in accordance with IEC 60034-1 that: - have a rated voltage up to 1 000 V; - are intended for direct-on-line or star-delta starting; - are rated on the basis of duty type S1; - are constructed to any degree of protection and explosion protection. The main changes with respect to the previous edition are as follows: - new design letter E for extended efficiency motors, explanation of all design letters, and description of new designs NE, NEY, HE, and HEY; - addition of a reference to IEC 60079-7; - addition of a formula to calculate locked rotor current from apparent power.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 60034-12:2016 - "Rotating electrical machines - Part 12: Starting performance of single-speed three-phase cage induction motors" specifies the starting-performance parameters for single-speed three‑phase cage induction motors (50 Hz or 60 Hz) with a rated voltage up to 1 000 V. It defines torque, current and apparent‑power limits and starting behavior for a range of design classes (for example N, NE, NY, NEY, H, HE, HY, HEY), and applies to motors intended for direct‑on‑line (DOL) or star‑delta starting, rated for continuous duty (S1) and constructed to any degree of protection including explosion‑protected versions.
Key Topics
- Design classification - Design letters and their meaning (normal, high, extended‑efficiency variants, and combinations) to specify expected starting performance.
- Starting torque parameters - Definitions and minimum/maximum limits for locked‑rotor torque, pull‑up torque and breakdown torque relevant to each design.
- Locked‑rotor characteristics - Limits and definitions for locked‑rotor current (Il) and locked‑rotor apparent power (Sl); includes a formula to derive locked‑rotor current from apparent power.
- Starting requirements - Minimum/maximum allowable values (limiting values without tolerances) that manufacturers and purchasers use to agree on motor suitability.
- Mechanical inertia - Guidance on allowable external moment of inertia (J) for reliable starting under specified conditions.
- Explosion‑protected motors - Application to motors with type of protection ‘e – increased safety’ and references to relevant explosive‑atmosphere standards.
Practical Applications
- Motor manufacturers and design engineers use IEC 60034-12 to design and classify cage induction motors for predictable starting behavior and to document guaranteed starting parameters in datasheets.
- Specifiers and procurement teams refer to this standard to select motors compatible with DOL or star‑delta starting systems and to ensure system protection settings (e.g., starters, overloads) match locked‑rotor current and torque limits.
- OEMs and system integrators apply the limits for mechanical design verification (external inertia, acceleration time) and for installations in hazardous areas where the standard cross‑references explosion protection requirements.
- Test laboratories use the definitions and parameter limits when verifying compliance of motors against declared starting performance.
