IEC 60034-7:2020 specifies the IM Code, a classification of types of construction, mounting arrangements and the terminal box position of rotating electrical machines. Two systems of classification are provided as follows: - Code I: An alpha-numeric designation applicable to machines with end-shield bearing(s) and only one shaft extension - Code II: An all-numeric designation applicable to a wider range of types of machines including types covered by Code I. This third edition cancels and replaces the second edition, published in 1992, and its Amendment 1:2000. The main technical changes with regard to the previous edition are as follows: - note on twin motors added - reference to 4.3 instead of duplication of text - new subclause on marking of shaft inclination or declination. The contents of the corrigendum of March 2023 have been included in this copy.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 60034-7:2020 is an international standard published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that specifies the classification system known as the IM Code. This standard categorizes rotating electrical machines based on their construction type, mounting arrangements, and terminal box position. The IM Code facilitates clear communication, design standardization, and easy identification across the industry of electric motors, generators, and similar rotating machines.
The 2020 edition is the third release of this standard, replacing the 1992 version and its 2000 amendment. Notable technical updates include additional notes on twin motors, improved referencing within the document, and new guidance regarding shaft inclination or declination markings. The corrigendum from March 2023 is also incorporated.
Key Topics
-
IM Code Classification Systems
IEC 60034-7 defines two classification codes:- Code I: An alpha-numeric system designed for machines with end-shield bearings and a single shaft extension. It is ideal for typical horizontal or vertical shaft machines.
- Code II: An all-numeric system broader in scope, covering a wider range of machine types including those classified under Code I.
-
Types of Construction
The standard clarifies arrangements of machine components such as frame, bearings, shaft extensions, and auxiliaries relative to one another. This “type of construction” forms a basis for classification. -
Mounting Arrangements
It specifies where and how the machine is to be mounted on site, including orientation of the shaft (horizontal or vertical) and the positioning of fixings to ensure standardized installation practices. -
Terminal Box Positioning
The IM Code identifies various permissible positions of the terminal box on the machine frame, which is critical for wiring access and operational safety. -
Shaft Inclination and Declination Marking
New to this edition is a subclause that prescribes the marking of shaft inclination or declination angles for machines installed at non-standard orientations, facilitating proper installation and maintenance. -
Relationship Between Codes
Annex A provides a cross-reference between Code I and Code II, allowing users to translate between the alpha-numeric and numeric designations effortlessly.
Applications
The IEC 60034-7:2020 standard is essential for manufacturers, designers, and end-users of rotating electrical machines to:
-
Standardize Design and Manufacture
Improves interoperability by ensuring consistent designation of machine build and mounting features across global markets. -
Optimize Installation
Clear mounting arrangement definitions support efficient and safe machine installation aligned with international best practices. -
Facilitate Maintenance and Replacement
Terminal box location classifications help service personnel identify wiring configurations easily, reducing downtime. -
Enhance Regulatory Compliance
Adherence to this IEC standard can assist organizations in meeting regional or national safety and performance regulations. -
Support Custom Configurations
With defined codes for a variety of mounting options and construction types, engineers can accurately specify machines tailored to complex operational environments.
