This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition published in 1990. This edition constitutes a technical revision. This edition included the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition: Terms and definitions have been revised to align with those used in the documents listed in the normative references. It has the status of a horizontal standard in accordance with IEC Guide 108.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 60050-426:2008 is a part of the International Electrotechnical Vocabulary (IEV) published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). This standard specifically addresses terminology related to equipment for explosive atmospheres. It serves as a comprehensive vocabulary that ensures consistent use of technical terms, facilitating clear communication and understanding among professionals engineering, manufacturing, and maintaining equipment designed for hazardous environments where explosive gases, vapors, or dust may be present.
The second edition, published in 2008, replaces the original 1990 edition. It includes significant technical revisions to harmonize terms and definitions with related normative documents. Recognized as a horizontal standard under IEC Guide 108, IEC 60050-426 plays a crucial role in harmonizing terminology across various related standards for explosive atmospheres worldwide.
Key Topics
The document is structured to cover a broad spectrum of terminology organized into sections for easier reference:
- General Terms - Fundamental vocabulary relevant to explosive environment equipment.
- Physical and Chemical Phenomena - Defines phenomena underlying explosive hazards.
- Areas and Zones - Classification of hazardous locations to guide equipment deployment.
- Construction of Electrical Apparatus - Terminology on design and material requirements.
- Test Methods - Terms related to inspection, testing, and certification procedures.
- Types of Protection - Vocabulary for protection methods such as flameproof enclosures (Type "d"), powder filling ("q"), increased safety ("e"), pressurization ("p"), oil immersion ("o"), intrinsic safety ("i"), encapsulation ("m"), and others.
- Maintenance and Repair - Terms covering inspection, maintenance, and overhaul of electrical equipment used in explosive atmospheres.
- Dust Protection Techniques - Concepts specific to dust explosive atmospheres including protective enclosures and intrinsic safety adaptations.
- Trace Heating - Definitions related to equipment for maintaining temperature to prevent explosive conditions.
Applications
IEC 60050-426:2008 is essential for professionals and organizations engaged in:
- Design and manufacturing of explosion-proof and intrinsically safe electrical apparatus.
- Certification and compliance testing of equipment for use in hazardous locations.
- Maintenance, inspection, and repair operations ensuring continued safe performance of electrical devices in explosive atmospheres.
- Regulatory bodies and standardization committees use this reference to ensure clarity and uniform application of terms in legislation and industry standards.
This vocabulary supports critical industries such as oil and gas, chemical processing, mining, pharmaceuticals, and any sector where explosive atmospheres may occur, providing a common language to mitigate risks effectively.
Related Standards
IEC 60050-426 is part of the broader IEC 60050 series, which is the international electrotechnical vocabulary covering multiple technical domains. It closely aligns with:
- IEC 60079 series - Standards governing electrical equipment in explosive gases.
- IEC Guide 108 - Guidelines on using horizontal standards for uniform terminology.
- National and international standards referencing explosive atmospheres, including ISO and other IEC standards, where consistent terminology enhances regulatory harmonization.
For further technical reference and updates on terminology, users should also consult the Electropedia online dictionary maintained by IEC, offering over 20,000 electrical and electronic terms relevant to explosive atmospheres and other fields.
