IEC 60068-2-17:2023 deals with seal tests applicable to the external and internal detection in container sealing of gross leaks and fine leaks to determine the effectiveness of seals of specimens. For further tests to verify the ability of enclosures, covers and seals to maintain components and equipment in good working order, IEC 60068‑2‑18 can be helpful. This fifth edition cancels and replaces the fourth edition published in 1994. This edition constitutes a technical revision. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition: a) "Survey of sealing tests" has been deleted and the relevant content moved to a new Clause 4 "General"; b) the Scope has been revised; c) the figures have been updated for clarification purposes; d) all non-SI units have been removed; e) the information to be given in the relevant specification has been revised.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 60068-2-17:2023 is the fifth edition of the International Electrotechnical Commission's standard focused on environmental testing, specifically Test Q: Sealing. This standard outlines the procedures for testing the sealing integrity of containers, enclosures, gaskets, bushes, and spindles to detect gross and fine leaks. Its primary aim is to ensure the effectiveness of seals to maintain internal environments and protect components and equipment under various operational conditions.
The 2023 revision updates the 1994 edition with significant technical changes, such as removing the previous survey of sealing tests, updating figures for clarity, eliminating non-SI units, and revising scope and specification information. This standard is essential for manufacturers and testers seeking reliable methods to verify seal performance and durability.
Key Topics
-
Scope and Purpose
IEC 60068-2-17 defines seal tests for both external and internal detection of leaks in containers and equipment enclosures. It is tailored for gross and fine leak detection aimed at assessing sealing effectiveness. -
Test Methods
The standard includes multiple test methods such as:- Test Qa: Sealing of bushes, spindles, and gaskets
- Test Qc: Gas leak testing of container sealing with multiple approaches
- Test Qd: Seepage of filling liquid in container sealing
- Test Qf: Immersion tests to verify seal integrity under liquid exposure
- Test Qk: Tracer gas method using a mass spectrometer for high-sensitivity leak detection
- Test Ql: Bomb pressure test to evaluate seal robustness under pressure
- Test Qm: Internal pressurization with tracer gas including total and local methods
- Test Qy: Pressure rise sealing test with leak rate calculations
-
Test Procedures and Conditioning
Each test covers initial measurements, conditioning phases (such as temperature or pressure cycling), final measurements, and recovery steps where applicable. Preconditions and severities are described to simulate real-world environmental stresses. -
Specification and Reporting
The standard mandates detailed information to be included in test specifications and final reports, ensuring consistency and traceability. This includes test parameters, equipment calibration, test durations, and exact leak rate calculations.
Applications
IEC 60068-2-17:2023 applies widely in industries where the reliability of seals is critical, including:
-
Electrical and Electronic Equipment
Ensuring enclosures protect sensitive components from environmental ingress such as dust, moisture, and gases. -
Automotive and Aerospace
Testing seals in fuel tanks, hydraulic systems, and pressure vessels to ensure safety and operational efficiency. -
Packaging and Container Manufacturing
Validating container seals to prevent contamination, leakage, or spoilage in food, pharmaceuticals, and chemicals. -
Quality Assurance and Regulatory Compliance
Providing standardized test methods for certifying products meet international sealing performance requirements. -
Research and Development
Enabling engineers to evaluate new sealing materials, designs, and technologies with objective leakage measurements.
Related Standards
The effectiveness of IEC 60068-2-17 is enhanced when used alongside complementary standards:
