IEC 60068-2-55:2013 provides a standard procedure for determining the ability of a specimen to withstand specified severities of bounce, e. g. when transported as loose cargo on wheeled vehicles. This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition, published in 1987, and constitutes a technical revision. The main changes with respect to the previous edition are listed below: This new edition allows for loose cargo testing in a more general sense. The test is no longer aligned with a special testing machine but allows for use of any suitable equipment such as electrodynamic or servo-hydraulic shaker tables. Moreover, sinusoidal and random vibration can be used. The previous rotation table motions are included in Annex A as historical methods. This publication is to be read in conjunction with IEC 60068-1:1988.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 60068-2-55:2013 is an international standard published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that specifies environmental testing methods for assessing the ability of specimens to withstand dynamic stresses from bounce during transportation as loose cargo on wheeled vehicles. This second edition revises the original 1987 version, broadening the scope to include various suitable equipment such as electrodynamic or servo-hydraulic shaker tables. It allows for sinusoidal and random vibration testing and provides guidance for loose cargo handling conditions.
This standard is crucial for manufacturers, testing laboratories, and quality assurance teams aiming to evaluate how products, packages, or transport cases endure harsh transit conditions without mechanical damage. It complements other IEC 60068 environmental testing standards and provides practical methodologies to simulate real-world transportation impacts.
Key Topics
-
Scope and Purpose
IEC 60068-2-55 applies to specimens such as packaged products or equipment that may be transported loosely on vehicles without being fastened down. The main goal is to assess structural integrity and resistance to bounce impacts occurring during transit. -
Test Description
Tests apply controlled bounce motions using a vibrating platform where the specimen experiences dynamic shocks reflective of transport conditions. The specimen is placed on the platform without additional fixtures, allowing it to move naturally. -
Test Equipment
- The test platform dimensions generally include a plywood top (24 to 32 mm thick) fixed on a sturdy frame.
- Suitable drivers include electrodynamic or servo-hydraulic shaker tables.
- Traditional bounce testing machines with rotating shafts and eccentrics are described as historical methods included in Annex A.
-
Motion and Vibration Modes
Tests may employ sinusoidal, random, or mixed vibration modes to replicate bounce loads realistically. -
Severity Levels and Control
Test severity is expressed as accelerations related to the earth’s gravity (g), with control points on the platform ensuring the specified conditions are met during testing. -
Preconditioning, Measurement, and Acceptance Criteria
Recommendations include initial and final functional assessments, with test acceptance criteria defined by the product specification and aligned with operational transport environments.
Applications
-
Transport Package Testing
Assessing the ability of transport packages or cases to protect their contents against shocks and bounce-related impacts in shipping and logistical handling. -
Product Durability Assessment
Evaluating the mechanical resilience of electrotechnical products and equipment to loose cargo transport stresses. -
Quality Assurance and Compliance
Using IEC 60068-2-55 in quality control processes to verify that goods comply with transport durability requirements before market launch or shipment. -
Design Validation
Supporting product and packaging design improvements by simulating real bounce impacts experienced during transport to prevent damage and reduce warranty claims.

Practical Value
IEC 60068-2-55:2013 empowers manufacturers and testers with a versatile, internationally recognized bounce testing method adaptable to modern test equipment. By ensuring products are robust against bounce-induced shocks during transport as loose cargo, companies can reduce damage rates, improve customer satisfaction, and comply with stringent international transport and safety requirements. This standard also facilitates consistent testing practices globally, enabling fair product benchmarking and regulatory acceptance.
