Gives a method of test which provides a standard procedure to determine the ability of components, equipment and other articles, hereinafter referred to as specimens, to withstand specified severities of sinusoidal vibration. If an item is to be tested in an unpackaged form, that is without its packaging, it is referred to as a test specimen. However, if the item is packaged then the item itself is referred to as a product and the item and its packaging together are referred to as a test specimen. The purpose of this test is to determine any mechanical weakness and/or degradation in the specified performance of specimens and to use this information, in conjunction with the relevant specification, to decide upon the acceptability of the specimens. In some cases, the test method may also be used to demonstrate the mechanical robustness of specimens and/or to study their dynamic behaviour. Categorization of components can also be made on the basis of a selection from within the severities quoted in the test. The major changes with regard to the previous edition concern: - Reference to the latest version of IEC 60068-2-47:Mounting - Simplification of the layout of the standard by replacing some tables with text. - Addition of the test report requirements (see Clause 13).
Abstract
Overview
IEC 60068-2-6:2007 is an international standard developed by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that specifies a method for environmental testing through sinusoidal vibration. This standard details a test procedure-referred to as Test Fc-that evaluates the ability of components, equipment, and other articles (collectively called specimens) to withstand specified severities of sinusoidal vibration. It covers testing both unpackaged items (test specimens) and packaged products (product plus packaging as test specimen).
The main goal of this test is to identify mechanical weaknesses or performance degradation caused by vibration exposure. Beyond acceptability assessment, the method helps demonstrate mechanical robustness and study dynamic behavior under vibration stresses commonly encountered in transportation and operational environments such as ships, aircraft, land vehicles, rotorcraft, space applications, machinery, and seismic events.
Key Topics
-
Test Methodology
The standard outlines procedures for applying controlled sinusoidal vibration over specific frequency ranges and amplitudes, either sweeping continuously or at discrete frequencies. It emphasizes deterministic sinusoidal testing, allowing for straightforward diagnostic and service life evaluation. -
Test Specimen Definitions
- Test Specimen: Unpackaged item or packaged product plus packaging.
- Product: Item without packaging.
-
Vibration Characteristics
- Frequency and amplitude parameters are clearly defined to simulate real-world vibration conditions.
- Control strategies include single or multi-point control to maintain accurate vibration profiles.
-
Mounting and Setup
Reference to IEC 60068-2-47 ensures consistent specimen mounting, crucial for reliable testing outcomes. -
Severity Selection
The standard provides a rationalized set of vibration severities, including frequency ranges, amplitudes, and endurance durations, supported by informative annexes illustrating typical severities for components and equipment. -
Testing Procedures
- Endurance testing with sinusoidal vibration through sweeping frequencies or at fixed points.
- Preconditioning, initial, intermediate, and final measurement stages facilitate comprehensive specimen evaluation.
-
Reporting Requirements
Clause 13 details the necessary content for test reports to ensure transparency and traceability of test conditions and results.
Applications
IEC 60068-2-6:2007 is applicable broadly across industries where electrical, electronic, and mechanical equipment must endure vibration without failure:
- Transportation Systems: Testing components used in aerospace, automotive, marine, and railway sectors to verify reliability under operational vibration loads.
- Industrial Machinery: Ensuring robustness of parts subject to oscillatory motions and pulsations during operation.
- Military and Defense: Qualification of ruggedized equipment designed for harsh field conditions.
- Electronics Manufacturing: Assessing packaging integrity and product resilience in shipping and handling.
- Space Technology: Confirming structural integrity and performance under unique vibrational forces encountered during launch and space missions.
- Seismic and Structural Engineering: Simulating ground vibration effects on sensitive instrumentation and subsystems.
By adopting IEC 60068-2-6, manufacturers, testers, and quality assurance teams can guarantee that their products meet international vibration endurance standards, promoting global trade and safety.
Related Standards
To ensure comprehensive environmental testing, IEC 60068-2-6 is part of the broader IEC 60068 series on environmental testing. Related standards include:
- IEC 60068-2-47: Specifies mounting methods for vibration tests to ensure uniform test conditions.
- IEC 60068-1: Provides general and guidance principles for environmental testing applicable to electrotechnical products.
- IEC 60068-2-14: Deals with tests for vibration by broad-band random vibration.
- IEC 60068-2-64: Covers vibration testing by broadband random vibration introduction.
Understanding and utilizing these complementary documents alongside IEC 60068-2-6 enhances the reliability and validity of vibration testing programs.
