IEC 60079-0:2026 is available as IEC 60079-0:2026 RLV which contains the International Standard and its Redline version, showing all changes of the technical content compared to the previous edition. IEC 60079-0:2026 specifies the general requirements for construction, testing and marking of Ex Equipment and Ex Components intended for use in or associated with explosive atmospheres. The standard atmospheric conditions (relating to the explosion characteristics of the atmosphere) for Ex Equipment are: - temperature −20 °C to +60 °C; - pressure 80 kPa (0,8 bar) to 110 kPa (1,1 bar); and - air with normal oxygen content, typically a volume fraction of 21 %. This IEC 60079-0:2026 and other documents supplementing this document specify additional test requirements for Ex Equipment operating outside the standard temperature range, but in some cases, further additional consideration and additional testing is required for Ex Equipment operating outside the standard atmospheric pressure range and standard oxygen content. Such additional testing is particularly relevant with respect to Types of Protection that depend on quenching of a flame such as 'flameproof enclosures "d"' (IEC 60079-1) or limitation of energy, 'intrinsic safety "i"' (IEC 60079-11). This eighth edition cancels and replaces the seventh edition, published in 2017. This edition constitutes a technical revision. Refer to the Foreword of the document for a complete listing of the technical changes between edition 8.0 and the previous edition of the document.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 60079-0:2026 - Explosive atmospheres - Part 0: Equipment - General requirements, published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), sets out the essential construction, testing, and marking requirements for Ex Equipment and Ex Components used in or associated with explosive atmospheres. This eighth edition, which supersedes the 2017 version, forms the core standard for ensuring safety in potentially hazardous areas affected by explosive gases or dusts. It is available as a Redline Version (RLV), highlighting all technical changes from the previous edition.
This standard defines the baseline environmental conditions for Ex Equipment:
- Ambient temperature: −20 °C to +60 °C
- Pressure: 80 kPa (0.8 bar) to 110 kPa (1.1 bar)
- Oxygen content: approximately 21% by volume
IEC 60079-0:2026 is fundamental for safety and regulatory compliance in a wide range of industries, particularly oil & gas, chemical processing, mining, and industrial automation, where the risk of explosion is present.
Key Topics
IEC 60079-0:2026 covers several critical aspects of Ex Equipment for explosive atmospheres, including:
- General Requirements for Construction: Materials selection, mechanical strength, and structural integrity for both metallic and non-metallic enclosures.
- Temperature Classifications: Maximum surface temperatures under normal and fault conditions to prevent ignition of surrounding explosive atmospheres.
- Component Grouping: Classification for use in different groups (Group I for mining, Group II for gas, Group III for dust).
- Testing and Type Verification: Comprehensive type tests, including impact, thermal, electrical, and environmental stress, to verify safety criteria.
- Marking and Documentation: Standardized marking (Ex marking), certification details, and accompanying documentation to support equipment identification and traceability.
- Special Requirements: Additional provisions for equipment that operates outside standard atmospheric conditions, vital for protection types like flameproof enclosures ("d", IEC 60079-1) or intrinsic safety ("i", IEC 60079-11).
- Earthing and Bonding: Guidance on providing safe connections and managing electrostatic hazards, especially for non-metallic enclosures and batteries.
Applications
IEC 60079-0:2026 is broadly applicable wherever explosive atmospheres may occur due to flammable gases, vapors, or dusts. Typical practical applications include:
- Process Industries: Ensuring electrical and electronic equipment safety in refineries, chemical plants, and storage facilities handling flammable materials.
- Mining: Compliance for electrical equipment used in underground coal mines where methane or coal dust may create an explosive atmosphere.
- Manufacturing: Integrating suitable Ex Components in machinery and process lines to prevent ignition sources.
- Transportation & Storage: Securing equipment used in fuel depots, tankers, grain silos, and similar environments.
Manufacturers, system integrators, and facility safety managers rely on this standard to design, select, and maintain equipment that is certified for use in hazardous (classified) locations, minimizing explosion risks and ensuring regulatory approval.
Related Standards
IEC 60079-0:2026 serves as the foundational document in the IEC 60079 series. Key related standards include:
- IEC 60079-1: Explosive atmospheres - Part 1: Equipment protection by flameproof enclosures “d”
- IEC 60079-11: Explosive atmospheres - Part 11: Equipment protection by intrinsic safety “i”
- IEC 60079-15: Explosive atmospheres - Part 15: Equipment protection by type of protection “n”
- IEC 60079-18: Explosive atmospheres - Part 18: Equipment protection by encapsulation “m”
- ISO/IEC 80079-36/37: Non-electrical equipment for explosive atmospheres
Organizations seeking compliance and optimal safety should use IEC 60079-0 in conjunction with these and other sector- or protection-specific standards.
Adhering to IEC 60079-0:2026 supports global best practice in explosion protection, facilitates international trade, and underpins modern regulatory frameworks for equipment in hazardous locations.
