IEC 60092-501:2013(E) specifies requirements for all electric propulsion plants and gives the specifications, system design, installation and testing of at least: - generators and their prime movers; - switchboards; - transformers/reactors; - semiconductor convertors; - propulsion motors; - excitation systems; - control, monitoring and safety systems; - wires, cables, busbars, trunking systems; - harmonic filters. Bow and stern thrusters intended as auxiliary steering devices, booster and take-home devices, all auxiliary generating plants, and accumulator battery powered propulsion machinery and equipment are excluded. This fifth edition cancels and replaces the fourth edition published in 2007. It constitutes a technical revision. This edition included the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition: a) requirements regarding system responsibility, electromagnetic compatibility (EMC), harmonic distortion and filtering, special requirements for ships with propulsion motor(s) and podded drives, and power management system (PMS); b) overall technical review to update the standard according to general requirements and referenced equipment standards.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 60092-501:2013 - Electrical installations in ships - Part 501: Special features - Electric propulsion plant - is the 5th edition (2013) of the IEC guidance for electrical systems dedicated to ship electric propulsion. It specifies system design, installation, testing and documentation requirements for electric propulsion plants and their major components. This technical revision updates system responsibility, electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) and harmonic requirements, special rules for propulsion motors and podded drives, and power management systems (PMS).
Key scope items covered include:
- Generators and prime movers
- Propulsion switchboards
- Transformers / reactors
- Semiconductor converters
- Propulsion motors and excitation systems
- Control, monitoring and safety systems
- Wires, cables, busbars and trunking systems
- Harmonic filters
Note: auxiliary bow/stern thrusters, auxiliary generating plants, booster/take-home devices and accumulator battery powered propulsion are excluded.
Key Topics and Requirements
- System design and responsibility: defines design principles, configuration for single- and multi-motor plants, and allocation of system responsibility.
- Electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) & harmonics: requirements for conducted/radiated emissions, total harmonic distortion (THD) and specifications for harmonic filtering to protect power quality.
- Power management system (PMS): functional and testing requirements for generation/load coordination and operational stability.
- Converters and power electronics: design, cooling, protection and testing requirements for semiconductor converters used in propulsion.
- Propulsion motors and podded drives: mechanical, thermal, protection and accessibility requirements; special provisions for podded/azimuth drives, sensors and internal-fault protection.
- Protection, alarms and control: matrices and required monitoring/alarms (Annex A), start-blocking criteria, local/bridge control stations and availability requirements.
- Mechanical/electrical interfaces: torsional stress, regenerated energy handling, bearing/lubrication and cooling requirements for rotating machines.
- Testing and documentation: in-process tests, factory acceptance tests (FAT), dock and sea trials, plus comprehensive documentation deliverables.
Practical Applications
IEC 60092-501 is applied when designing, installing, commissioning and certifying an electric propulsion plant onboard merchant ships, ferries, cruise vessels and specialized ships using electric drive systems. The standard helps ensure:
- safe and interoperable propulsion electrical systems,
- compliance with EMC and harmonic limits,
- robust control and power management,
- predictable performance during sea trials and operations.
Who Should Use This Standard
- Marine electrical and propulsion system designers and integrators
- Shipyards and naval architects implementing electric propulsion systems
- Equipment manufacturers (generators, transformers, converters, motors)
- Classification societies, flag state authorities and surveyors
- Commissioning engineers and test teams (FAT, dock/sea trials)
