IEC 60115-8:2009 is applicable to fixed surface mount resistors for use in electronic equipment. These resistors are typically described according to types (different geometric shapes) and styles (different dimensions). They have metallized terminations and are primarily intended to be mounted directly on to a circuit board. The major technical changes with regard to the first edition are the following: - introduction of a product classification based on application requirements; - extension of the list of styles and dimensions; - use of an extended scope of stability class definitions; - extension of the lists of preferred values of ratings; - inclusion of test conditions and requirements for lead-free soldering, for periodic overload and for resistance to electrostatic discharge (ESD); - inclusion of a new set of severities for a shear test; - inclusion of definitions for a test board; - replacement of assessment level E and possible others by the sole assessment level EZ, meeting the requirements of a "zero defect" approach; - inclusion of an extended endurance test, a flammability test, a temperature rise test, vibration tests, an extended rapid change of temperature test, and a single pulse high-voltage overload test; - inclusion of requirements applicable to 0 ohm resistors (jumpers).
Abstract
Overview - IEC 60115-8:2009 (Fixed surface mount resistors)
IEC 60115-8:2009 is the sectional specification in the IEC 60115 series that applies to fixed surface mount resistors (SMD resistors) used in electronic equipment. The standard defines how these resistors are described (by type, style and dimensions), their metallized terminations, preferred ratings and characteristics, and the test and assessment procedures required for qualification and production quality control. Notable updates in this edition include a product classification by application, extended style lists, stability class definitions, and inclusion of lead‑free soldering and electrostatic discharge (ESD) requirements.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Product classification and dimensions: Preferred styles and geometric types (rectangular, cylindrical, etc.), plus expanded lists of sizes and pad recommendations.
- Ratings and characteristics: Preferred resistance values, tolerances, temperature coefficient, rated dissipation, limiting element and insulation voltages, and climatic categories.
- Stability and limits: Extended stability class definitions and limits for permissible resistance change under specified tests.
- Test coverage and severities:
- Lead‑free soldering compatibility and solderability tests
- Periodic pulse/overload and single‑pulse high‑voltage overload tests
- Electrostatic discharge (ESD) resistance requirements
- Shear (adhesion) test with defined severities
- Extended endurance, flammability, temperature‑rise, vibration and rapid temperature change tests
- Temperature rise and mechanical/environmental test layouts (Kelvin 4‑point for low resistances)
- Quality assessment and approval: Procedures for qualification approval (fixed sample size, lot‑by‑lot, periodic testing), and the adoption of assessment level EZ supporting a “zero defect” approach.
- 0 Ω resistors (jumpers): Specific requirements and test schedules for 0 Ω SMD jumpers are included.
Applications and who uses this standard
IEC 60115-8 is relevant to:
- Electronics component manufacturers designing and producing SMD resistors and 0 Ω jumpers.
- PCB designers and OEMs specifying resistor selection, mounting and soldering processes.
- Quality engineers and test labs conducting component qualification, reliability testing and batch conformance.
- Procurement and regulatory teams ensuring components meet international reliability and lead‑free soldering standards.
Practical use cases include component datasheet specification, supplier qualification, reliability testing for consumer, automotive, industrial and telecommunications electronics, and establishing manufacturing inspection plans.
