IEC 60243-2:2013 gives requirements additional to those in IEC 60243-1 for the determination of the electric strength of solid insulating materials under direct voltage stress. This third edition cancels and replaces the second edition published in 2001, and constitutes an editorial revision. This publication is to be read in conjunction with IEC 60243-1:2013 .
Abstract
Overview
IEC 60243-2:2013 is an international standard developed by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that specifies additional requirements for testing the electric strength of solid insulating materials under direct voltage conditions. This document supplements IEC 60243-1:2013 which covers test methods for electric strength at power frequencies. The 2013 edition cancels and replaces the previous 2001 edition, offering editorial revisions and ensuring alignment with current testing needs.
The standard is crucial for assessing the dielectric rigidity of insulating materials when subjected to continuous (direct) voltage stress, providing detailed guidelines on test setup, procedures, and equipment specifications. It ensures testing consistency, safety, and reliability in evaluating insulation materials used across electrical and electronic industries.
Key Topics
-
Scope and Application
IEC 60243-2 focuses exclusively on the direct voltage (DC) tests on solid insulating materials, clarifying how to properly determine their electric strength beyond the alternating voltage methods described in IEC 60243-1. -
Test Significance
Direct voltage applications differ fundamentally from alternating voltage tests. The standard highlights the impact of resistive and capacitive voltage distributions, electric absorption currents, leakage currents, and partial discharge phenomena. It explains why DC breakdown voltages are often significantly higher than AC breakdown voltages, especially for layered or heterogeneous materials. -
Test Equipment and Electrical Apparatus
- Use of an appropriate power supply with smooth voltage increase and selectable polarity (positive or negative) is mandated.
- Voltage ripple must remain under 2% above 50% of breakdown voltage, and transients below 1%.
- A current-limiting resistor is essential to protect both the specimen and power supply during breakdown events.
- Post-test, electrodes must be short-circuited to earth to safely dissipate residual charges.
-
Test Procedure
- Voltage application methods and criteria for breakdown detection are aligned with IEC 60243-1 but adapted for DC conditions.
- Breakdown is typically identified by a sudden current spike or when current surpasses a specified threshold.
-
Data Reporting
Detailed reporting requirements include material identification, specimen preparation, polarity, voltage values, test conditions (temperature, pressure, humidity), and electrode setup for clear reproducibility and analysis.
Applications
IEC 60243-2:2013 is widely applicable in fields where insulating materials undergo continuous high voltage stress, including:
-
Electrical Equipment Manufacturing
Selection and quality control of insulating materials for transformers, switchgear, cables, and capacitors requiring reliable dielectric performance under DC voltage. -
Research and Development
Characterization and development of novel solid insulators, composites, and multilayer materials for enhanced electric strength. -
Testing and Certification Laboratories
Standardized methodology enables consistent evaluation, certification, and comparison of insulation materials worldwide. -
Maintenance and Safety Compliance
Assessing insulation integrity and aging behavior in electrical components subjected to direct voltage stresses in power systems or electronic devices.

Summary
IEC 60243-2:2013 provides clear, standardized guidelines for testing the electric strength of solid insulating materials using direct voltage. It addresses equipment requirements, testing procedures, and data reporting, ensuring tests produce reliable, comparable results critical for electrical equipment safety, design, and certification. Professionals working in material testing, electrical design, and quality assurance will find this standard indispensable for managing insulation performance under DC stress conditions.
