IEC 60245-3:2026 defines the particular requirements for rubber heat resistant silicone insulated cables of rated voltage of 300/500 V which apply in addition to the general requirements specified in IEC 60245-1, which apply to all cables. The tests for cables specified in the IEC 60245 series are described in IEC 63294. IEC 60245-3:2026 includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition: a) reference to IEC 60245-2 for the tests has been deleted and replaced by IEC 63294; b) normative references have been updated. This document is to be used in conjunction with IEC 60245-1.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 60245-3:2026 specifies the particular requirements for rubber heat resistant silicone insulated cables with rated voltages of 300/500 V. This standard applies in addition to the general requirements provided in IEC 60245-1, which covers all rubber insulated cables up to 450/750 V. Developed by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), IEC 60245-3:2026 ensures consistent safety, performance, and reliability for silicone insulated cable types used in environments where enhanced thermal resistance is essential. The document also incorporates references to updated test methodologies and normative standards to ensure compliance with the latest industry practices.
Key Topics
- Scope and Definitions: Details the specific construction and performance expectations for silicone insulated rubber cables, including definitions tailored to their use.
- Cable Construction:
- Single conductor made of class 5, plain or tinned (or other protected) copper wire, meeting IEC 60228 specifications.
- Silicone rubber insulation compound applied by extrusion in a single layer for maximum heat resistance.
- Treated glass fibre braid as the outer covering.
- Rated Voltage: Specifies cables rated to 300/500 V AC, within an overall product range up to 450/750 V.
- Temperature Resistance: Designed for environments requiring a maximum conductor temperature up to 180°C in normal service.
- Testing Requirements: Replaces references to IEC 60245-2 with IEC 63294 for all relevant test methods, covering electrical, constructional, dimensional, and mechanical property checks.
Applications
Silicone insulated rubber cables compliant with IEC 60245-3:2026 are specially designed for use in applications where high thermal endurance and flexibility are essential, such as:
- Industrial Equipment: Suitable for machinery operating in high-temperature zones where standard insulation could degrade.
- Heating and Lighting Circuits: Frequently used in lighting fixtures, ovens, or heating equipment where the insulation is exposed to elevated temperatures.
- Household Appliances: Provides durable insulation in appliances subjected to regular heating cycles.
- Control and Signalling: Used in electrical panels and automation systems requiring reliable performance under thermal stress.
The cables covered by this standard can be safely selected and installed according to the guidelines in IEC 62440, which provides general advice for the use of electric cables with rated voltages not exceeding 450/750 V.
