IEC 60245-4:2026 defines the particular requirements for rubber insulated and braided cords and for rubber insulated and rubber or polychloroprene or other equivalent synthetic elastomer sheathed cords and flexible cables of rated voltages up to and including 450/750 V which apply in addition to the general requirements specified in IEC 60245-1, which apply to all cables. IEC 60245-4:2026 includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition: a) reference to tests according to IEC 60245-2 has been deleted and replaced by IEC 63294; b) normative references have been updated. This document is to be used in conjunction with IEC 60245-1.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 60245-4:2026 is an international standard developed by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that specifies the particular requirements for rubber insulated cords and flexible cables with rated voltages up to and including 450/750 V. This standard targets cables that are rubber insulated, and feature either rubber, polychloroprene, or equivalent synthetic elastomer sheaths, complementing the general requirements outlined in IEC 60245-1. It is a crucial reference for ensuring the safety, performance, and compatibility of flexible cables used in various electrical installations.
This fourth edition includes notable updates such as the replacement of test references from IEC 60245-2 to IEC 63294 and updated normative references, ensuring alignment with the latest global standards for cable testing and construction.
Key Topics
- Scope and Purpose: Defines cable types covered, including construction and performance requirements for cords and flexible cables, emphasizing safety and durability in practical installations.
- Types of Cables: Addresses ordinary tough rubber-sheathed cords (designated as 60245 IEC 53), polychloroprene or synthetic elastomer cords (60245 IEC 57), heavy-duty flexible cables (60245 IEC 66), and cords for decorative chains (60245 IEC 58, 60245 IEC 58f).
- Rated Voltages: Specifies rated voltages up to and including 450/750 V, with typical products in the 300/500 V and 450/750 V categories.
- Construction Requirements: Covers critical aspects such as conductor material, insulation, separators, sheath composition, assembly of cores and fillers, and dimensional tolerances.
- Testing and Compliance: References essential testing methods for mechanical, electrical, and durability performance, as well as temperature and flexing characteristics, in line with IEC 63294 and other relevant standards.
- Guidance on Use: Offers practical advice for the correct application of flexible rubber cables, including temperature rating and handling.
Applications
IEC 60245-4:2026 finds widespread adoption in various applications where flexible, robust, and safe cabling is required:
- Domestic and Commercial Appliances: Including portable and movable equipment where flexible cable routing is needed.
- Industrial Installations: Suitable for equipment subjected to vibrational or mechanical stress, such as tools, machines, and temporary power distribution systems.
- Decorative Chains and Lighting: Prescribes requirements for cables used in decorative chains for lighting and event installations.
- General Electrical Installations: Ensures safety and reliability in fixed and mobile wiring systems up to the rated voltages.
The standard supports manufacturers, installers, and designers in selecting the appropriate cable types to guarantee compliance with international safety regulations and to meet performance expectations in demanding environments.
Related Standards
For complete adherence to global best practices for rubber insulated flexible cables, the following standards are referenced within IEC 60245-4:2026:
- IEC 60245-1: General requirements for rubber insulated cables up to 450/750 V - mandatory for use alongside Part 4.
- IEC 63294: Test methods for electric cables with rated voltage up to and including 450/750 V.
- IEC 60811 series: Test methods for non-metallic materials, including mechanical and thermal aging, ozone resistance, and oil immersion.
- IEC 60245-8: Additional requirements for highly flexible cords and cables.
- IEC 60719: Calculation methods for cable dimensions.
- IEC 62440: Guide to the use of electric cables with rated voltage not exceeding 450/750 V.
- IEC 60228: Classification and requirements for conductors used in insulated cables.
Conclusion
Implementing the requirements set forth in IEC 60245-4:2026 ensures that rubber insulated cords and flexible cables meet high standards for performance, reliability, and safety. By following the guidance and testing protocols specified, manufacturers and users can achieve robust electrical installations suitable for a wide range of domestic, commercial, and industrial needs, all while maintaining compliance with updated international cable standards.
