IEC 60245-6:2026 defines the particular requirements for rubber insulated arc welding electrode cables of rated voltages up to and including 450/750 V which apply in addition to the general requirements specified in IEC 60245-1, which apply to all cables. The tests for cables specified in the IEC 60245 series are described in IEC 63294. IEC 60245-6:2026 includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition: a) reference to IEC 60245-2 for the tests has been deleted and replaced by IEC 63294 b) reference to lift cable according to IEC 60254-5 has been deleted c) normative references have been updated This document is to be used in conjunction with IEC 60245-1.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 60245-6:2026 is an international standard published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that specifies the particular requirements for rubber insulated arc welding electrode cables with rated voltages up to and including 450/750 V. This part of the IEC 60245 series is intended to ensure that arc welding cables are constructed, tested, and used in a safe and reliable manner. The standard must be used in conjunction with IEC 60245-1, which outlines general requirements for all cables in this voltage range.
IEC 60245-6:2026 replaces previous references to certain test standards with updated documents and clarifies normative references to ensure alignment with current best practices. The requirements and testing methods detailed in this document are essential for manufacturers, users, and certification bodies working with arc welding electrode cables.
Key Topics
- Scope: Focuses on rubber insulated arc welding electrode cables for voltages up to 450/750 V.
- Cable Types: Distinguishes between rubber sheathed cables (type 60245 IEC 81) and those with polychloroprene or equivalent sheathing (type 60245 IEC 82).
- Construction Requirements: Covers details regarding conductors, separators, and coverings, including materials and dimensions.
- Testing Methods: Mandates comprehensive testing as per IEC 63294, replacing previous references for standardized test procedures.
- Safety and Usage Guidance: Refers to IEC 62440 for principles of safe cable use.
- Technical Updates: Incorporates updated normative references and removes outdated cross-references to earlier standards.
Applications
The cables covered by IEC 60245-6:2026 are primarily intended for use as electrode cables in arc welding operations. Key sectors and practical applications include:
- Welding Industry: Secure connection of welding electrodes to power sources in industrial, manufacturing, and construction environments.
- Maintenance and Repair: Suitable for workshop settings where flexible yet robust cables are needed to handle high currents and frequent movement.
- Construction Sites: Used for arc welding tasks, benefiting from the cable’s durability and resistance to harsh handling and environmental factors.
By adhering to IEC 60245-6:2026, manufacturers ensure their products meet international benchmarks for safety, performance, and reliability. End-users gain confidence in the consistent quality and compatibility of welding cables, while regulatory authorities and inspection bodies benefit from a clear framework for product assessment.
