IEC 60332‑1‑2:2025 specifies the procedure for testing the resistance to vertical flame propagation for a single vertical electrical insulated conductor or cable, or optical fibre cable, under fire conditions using a 1 kW pre-mixed flame. The apparatus is described in IEC 60332‑1‑1. NOTE 1 Testing to IEC 60332‑1‑2 can be performed simultaneously with that to IEC 60332‑1‑3, if required. This group safety publication focusing on test method(s) is primarily intended to be used as a product safety standard for the products mentioned in the scope, but is also intended to be used by technical committees in the preparation of standards for products similar to those mentioned in the scope of this group safety publication, in accordance with the principles laid down in IEC Guide 104 and lSO/lEC Guide 51. NOTE 2 The performing of this test method on a single insulated conductor or cable or optical fibre cable does not provide compliance with fire propagation requirements in relevant standards in the case that the single insulated conductor or cable or optical fibre cable is installed with or amongst other cables as a group. (See the IEC 60332‑3 series). One of the responsibilities of a technical committee is, wherever applicable, to make use of basic safety publications and/or group safety publications in the preparation of its publications.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 60332-1-2:2025 is an international standard developed by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that specifies procedures for testing the resistance to vertical flame propagation of a single insulated electric wire, cable, or optical fibre cable under fire conditions using a 1 kW pre-mixed flame. This method is an essential aspect of cable fire performance testing and is widely used as a product safety standard to ensure cables can withstand fire hazards when installed individually. The apparatus used for this testing is detailed in IEC 60332-1-1.
IEC 60332-1-2 is intended for both manufacturers and technical committees developing, approving, or referencing standards for cables and related products. Although this test evaluates flame resistance on single cables, it is not designed to assess fire performance when cables are installed in bunches or groups.
Key Topics
-
Test Scope:
- Applies to single vertical electrical insulated conductors, cables, or optical fibre cables under fire conditions.
- Uses a 1 kW pre-mixed flame for vertical flame propagation testing.
- Not suitable for full assessment of fire hazard in grouped cable installations.
-
Group Safety Publication:
- Serves as a key reference for product safety across the cable industry and in the preparation of future safety standards.
-
Testing Procedure:
- Details sample conditioning, mounting, flame application, and measurement of flame propagation.
- Includes recommendations for test piece positioning to ensure reliable results.
- Sets minimum performance requirements for distance of charring after exposure to flame.
-
Importance of Compliance:
- Cables meeting the requirements of IEC 60332-1-2 offer enhanced fire safety performance, particularly in single cable installations.
Applications
Testing in accordance with IEC 60332-1-2:2025 is critical for ensuring the safety and reliability of electric and optical fibre cables in a range of industries, including:
- Electrical installations in residential, commercial, and industrial buildings, where minimizing flame propagation can prevent fire from spreading through wiring systems.
- Telecommunications and data centers, using optical fibre cables that require proven fire-resistance properties for consistent service and safety.
- Product design and quality assurance processes for cable manufacturers seeking market access in regions with rigorous safety requirements.
- Reference by regulatory authorities and certification bodies during compliance assessments and market surveillance activities.
It is important to note that, while IEC 60332-1-2 provides valuable data on a cable’s flame-retardant properties when tested individually, it does not indicate group installation behavior. For testing of cables installed in groups, reference should be made to the IEC 60332-3 series.
Related Standards
A full understanding of cable behavior under fire conditions often requires reference to several related international standards:
- IEC 60332-1-1: Specifies the apparatus for the vertical flame propagation test for a single insulated wire or cable.
- IEC 60332-1-3: Describes the procedure for determination of flaming droplets or particles during vertical flame testing.
- IEC 60332-2-2: Focuses on the test for vertical flame propagation using a diffusion flame, suitable for small wires or cables.
- IEC 60332-3 series: Specifies fire testing methods for cables installed in bunches, relevant where multiple cables are grouped.
- IEC Guide 104 and ISO/IEC Guide 51: Provide guidance on the preparation and use of safety publications in product standards.
Practical Value
Using IEC 60332-1-2:2025 helps organizations:
- Meet industry-recognized fire safety regulations for cable products.
- Reduce the risk of fire propagation in single-cable runs.
- Support compliance with regional and international market requirements.
- Guide technical committees and manufacturers during new product development or for updating existing product standards.
Ensuring compliance with IEC 60332-1-2 enhances fire safety, protects property and lives, and supports best practices in electric and optical fibre cable installation and manufacturing.
