IEC 60332-2-2:2004 Specifies the procedure for testing the resistance to vertical flame propagation for a single small vertical electrical insulated conductor or cable, or optical cable, under fire conditions. The apparatus is given in IEC 60332-2-1. This standard gives the procedure for testing small optical fibre cables or a small insulated conductor or cable when the method specified in IEC 60332-1-2 is not suitable because some small optical fibre cables may break or small conductors may melt during the application of the flame. The recommended range of application is for the testing of small single insulated conductors or cables of less than 0,5 mm² cross-section. NOTE Since the use of insulated conductor or cable which retards flame propagation and complies with the recommended requirements of this standard is not sufficient by itself to prevent propagation of fire under all conditions of installation, it is recommended that wherever the risk of propagation is high, for example, in long vertical runs of bunches of cables, special installation precautions should also be taken. It cannot be assumed that because the sample of cable complies with the performance requirements recommended in this standard, that a bunch of cables will behave in a similar manner. (See IEC 60332-3 series.) Recommended requirements for performance are given in Annex A.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 60332-2-2:2004 is an international standard developed by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that specifies the test method for assessing the vertical flame propagation characteristics of small insulated electric or optical fiber cables under fire conditions. This standard targets single small insulated conductors or cables, especially those with a cross-sectional area of less than 0.5 mm². It provides a procedure using a diffusion flame to simulate fire exposure and measure the cable’s resistance to flame spread.
This test method is important for ensuring fire safety in electrical installations by evaluating how small cables behave when exposed to vertical flames. It complements other parts of IEC 60332-2 and is particularly useful when other flame test methods are unsuitable-for example, when small cables or optical fibers may break or melt during testing.
Key Topics
-
Scope of Testing
IEC 60332-2-2 focuses on a vertical flame propagation test for a single small insulated wire or cable. It applies specifically to cables too delicate for the premixed 1kW flame test described in IEC 60332-1-2. Its recommended application is for cables under 0.5 mm² cross-section. -
Test Apparatus and Setup
The apparatus used is detailed in IEC 60332-2-1, ensuring standardization of equipment for accurate, reproducible testing. This includes the flame diffusion source and the fixture for vertical sample mounting. -
Testing Procedure
The cable is conditioned, positioned vertically, and exposed to the diffusion flame for a set duration. Observations are made regarding flame spread distance and duration, ensuring consistent and objective assessment. -
Evaluation Criteria
Results indicate whether the cable meets the recommended performance criteria to resist flame propagation. Annex A provides guidance on acceptable performance levels. -
Limitations and Precautions
Compliance with this test is not a guarantee against fire spread in all conditions. Special installation precautions are advised, particularly for long vertical installations or cable bundles, referencing additional standards such as the IEC 60332-3 series.
