IEC 60255-187-1:2021 specifies the minimum requirements for functional and performance evaluation of (longitudinal) differential protection designed for the detection of faults in ac motors, generators and transformers. This document also defines how to document and publish performance test results. This document defines the influencing factors that affect the accuracy under steady state conditions and performance characteristics during dynamic conditions. The test methodologies for verifying performance characteristics and accuracy are also included in this document. This document, together with IEC 60255-187-2 and IEC 60255-187-3, cancels and replaces IEC 60255-13. This document includes the following significant technical changes with respect to IEC 60255-13: a) IEC 60255-13 has been significantly revised to follow the common structure of the functional standards for protection relays (IEC 60255-1xx series). IEC 60255-187-1 has been developed to address the restrained and unrestrained differential protection of motors, generators and transformers. The revisions include detailed description of the functions including the performance specification, testing and documentation requirements. The contents of the corrigendum of April 2023 have been included in this copy.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 60255-187-1:2021 is an international standard published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that sets the functional requirements for differential protection relays specifically designed for AC motors, generators, and transformers. This standard defines the minimum criteria for the design, performance evaluation, testing, and documentation of both restrained and unrestrained longitudinal differential protection schemes. It replaces the earlier IEC 60255-13 standard, aligning the requirements with the structured approach used in the IEC 60255-1xx series. The standard ensures accuracy, reliability, and security in fault detection under both steady-state and dynamic operating conditions.
Key Topics
- Functional Specifications: Defines the input energizing quantities, binary inputs and outputs, functional logic, and additional influencing factors affecting differential protection.
- Types of Differential Protection: Covers restrained differential protection, unrestrained differential protection, phase-biased differential protection, and biased restricted earth fault protection.
- Performance Requirements: Establishes criteria for the accuracy and stability of differential relays during steady-state conditions, dynamic faults, magnetizing inrush, overexcitation, and in the presence of load harmonics.
- Test Procedures: Includes standardized test methods for verifying basic characteristic accuracy, ratio compensation, phase/vector compensation, zero sequence compensation, harmonic restraint, operate timing, and relay stability.
- Documentation: Specifies how to document and publish performance test results for clarity and transparency in engineering and compliance processes.
Applications
IEC 60255-187-1:2021 is essential for manufacturers, testing laboratories, and end-users of protection relays used in power systems for:
- AC Motors: Protects motors against internal faults, ensuring quick fault clearance to prevent damage and downtime.
- Electric Generators: Safeguards generators by accurately detecting winding or core faults, maintaining system stability.
- Power Transformers: Monitors transformers to prevent catastrophic failures from winding short circuits or earth faults.
- Power System Protection Engineers: Provides guidelines for specifying, testing, and commissioning differential protection schemes.
- Utility Companies and Industrial Plants: Ensures reliable protection systems that reduce outage duration and equipment damage costs.
The standard addresses real-world challenges such as current transformer saturation, inrush currents during transformer energization, and geomagnetically induced currents (GIC), thereby improving the relay's security and dependability.
Related Standards
- IEC 60255-187-2 and IEC 60255-187-3: Complementary parts to IEC 60255-187-1, covering additional aspects of differential protection for motors, generators, and transformers, collectively superseding IEC 60255-13.
- IEC 60255 Series: A broader series of standards specifying general requirements for protection relays, including testing, performance, and functional criteria.
- IEC 60255-1xx Functional Standards: Provides a common structure and terminology for protection relay standards, facilitating harmonized product development and testing.
- National and Regional Standards: Local standards may reference IEC 60255-187-1 for harmonization of protection relay specifications.
This standard is vital for ensuring protection relays operate reliably and safely in critical electrical equipment, supporting the global power infrastructure's resilience and performance. Using IEC 60255-187-1 ensures compliance with international best practices for differential protection, enhancing operational security and reducing maintenance costs.
