IEC 60317-0-8:2019 specifies the general requirements of polyester glass-fibre wound fused, unvarnished, or resin or varnish impregnated bare, or grade 1 or grade 2 or enamelled rectangular copper winding wires. The range of nominal conductor dimensions is given in 4.1 and in the relevant specification sheet. This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition published in 2012. This edition constitutes a technical revision. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition: - revision to the title of the standard indicating that the glass fibre covering is fused and unvarnished; - revision to subclause 3.2 adding winding wire requirements for the fibrous covering and a list of covering classifications; - revision to subclause 3.3 requirements for appearance; - revision to subclause 8.2, adherence test requirements. Keywords: insulated wires used for windings in electrical equipment
Abstract
Overview
IEC 60317-0-8:2019 specifies the general requirements for polyester glass‑fibre wound rectangular copper winding wires - fused and unvarnished, or resin/varnish impregnated (or not), and available as bare, grade 1/grade 2, or enamelled. This second edition (2019) replaces the 2012 edition and is a technical revision focused on fibre covering, appearance and adherence test updates. The standard forms part of the IEC 60317 series for insulated wires used for windings in electrical equipment and references IEC 60851 for test methods.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and wire types: Rectangular copper conductors with polyester glass‑fibre coverings (fused/unvarnished) or coatings (varnish/resin), bare or enamelled, and defined insulation grades.
- Dimensions and tolerances: Nominal conductor sizes specified (see clause 4.1 and relevant specification sheets); overall dimensions and corner radii requirements are included.
- Mechanical and electrical properties: Requirements and tests for electrical resistance, elongation, springiness, flexibility, cut‑through, abrasion and solderability.
- Adherence and winding performance: Mandrel winding and adherence tests (clause 8, including recent 8.2 updates) to confirm the fibrous covering’s behaviour under winding stresses.
- Insulation integrity and ageing: Heat shock, breakdown voltage, continuity of insulation, temperature index, dielectric dissipation and loss of mass tests.
- Chemical resistance and compatibility: Resistance to solvents, transformer oil and refrigerants; heat/solvent bonding characteristics.
- Appearance and classifications: Revised appearance requirements (subclause 3.3) and covering classifications; definitions for “fused” polyester glass‑fibre (subclause 3.1.6).
- Packaging and related clauses: Packaging requirements and informative annexes (e.g., nominal cross‑section tables) are provided.
Applications and who uses this standard
IEC 60317-0-8 is intended for:
- Winding wire manufacturers - to define product specifications and quality checks.
- Transformer, motor and coil designers - to select appropriate rectangular copper wires for insulating and mechanical performance.
- Quality, test and compliance laboratories - to carry out standardized tests (referencing IEC 60851).
- Procurement and specifications teams - to write clear tender and purchasing requirements for insulated winding wires.
- Standards committees and certification bodies - for harmonized product assessment and international trade.
Use cases include specification of winding wire for power transformers, motors, inductors and other electromagnetic coils where rectangular copper wire with a fibrous polyester covering or varnish/resin treatment is required.
