IEC 60317-31:2015 specifies the requirements of glass fibre wound, resin or varnish impregnated, bare or enamelled rectangular copper winding wire, temperature index 180. The range of nominal conductor dimensions covered by this standard is: - width: min.2,0 mm max.16,0 mm; - thickness: min.0,80 mm max. 5,60 mm. The specified combinations of width and thickness as well as the specified width/thickness ratio are according to IEC 60317-0-4. This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition published in 1990, Amendment 1:1997 and Amendment 2:2005. This edition constitutes a technical revision. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition: - new 3.2.2 containing general notes on winding wire, formerly part of the scope; - introduction of glass fibre coverings over grade 1 enamelled conductor in 3.2.2; - revision to references to IEC 60317-0-4 to make clear that their application is normative. Keywords: temperature index 180, winding wire This publication is to be read in conjunction with IEC 60317-0-4:2015.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 60317-31:2015 is an international standard published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that specifies detailed requirements for glass fibre wound, resin or varnish impregnated, bare or enamelled rectangular copper winding wires. These wires are designed for applications requiring a temperature index of 180, ensuring reliable performance at elevated temperatures. This second edition updates earlier versions with technical revisions and clarifies normative references to IEC 60317-0-4:2015 for combined requirements.
The standard covers nominal conductor dimensions with a width ranging from 2.0 mm to 16.0 mm and thickness from 0.80 mm to 5.60 mm, including specific combinations per the referenced general standard IEC 60317-0-4. It is essential reading for manufacturers, engineers, and quality control professionals involved in producing or utilizing high-temperature winding wires in electrical equipment.
Key Topics
- Scope: Defines glass fibre wound copper wires with resin or varnish impregnation, bare or enamelled, specifically for low-voltage electrical windings operating reliably at 180 °C temperature index.
- Materials and Construction: Specifies the use of rectangular copper conductors covered with one or two layers of glass fibre, impregnated with resin or varnish, enhancing thermal and mechanical endurance.
- Temperature Index 180: Focuses on wires rated for continuous operation at 180 °C, critical for high-performance electrical machines.
- Dimensional Specifications: Provides precise nominal width and thickness ranges and enforces width/thickness ratios complying with IEC 60317-0-4:2015.
- Test Methods and Exceptions: Adopts test procedures per IEC 60317-0-4 while noting some traditional tests-such as heat shock, cut-through, abrasion, solvent resistance, and solderability-are not applicable for this wire type.
- Grades and Coverings: Offers options for glass fibre covering grades (GL1 and GL2) over either bare or enamelled conductors (grade 1 or 2), allowing customization based on application needs.
- Normative References: The standard must be used in conjunction with IEC 60317-0-4:2015, which provides general requirements and complements this part.
Applications
IEC 60317-31 winding wire is widely used where high thermal endurance and electrical reliability are critical, including:
- Electric Motors and Generators: For stator and rotor windings exposed to significant thermal stress.
- Transformers: Insulation layers in transformers where temperature resistance is mandatory to ensure performance and safety.
- High-Temperature Electrical Equipment: Devices operating in harsh thermal environments, such as industrial machinery and automotive components.
- Electromechanical Components: Actuators, coils, and solenoids requiring durable wire with stable electrical properties at elevated temperatures.
The specification’s emphasis on glass fibre coverings impregnated with resin or varnish makes the wire highly resistant to thermal degradation, mechanical wear, and electrical stress, thereby extending equipment life and reliability.
Related Standards
- IEC 60317 Series: Covers specifications for various types of winding wires, providing detailed norms for different materials and insulation types.
- IEC 60317-0-4:2015: General requirements for glass fibre wound resin or varnish impregnated rectangular copper wires, which must be consulted alongside this part.
- IEC 60851 Series: Defines test methods for winding wires, ensuring consistent quality and performance verification.
- IEC 60264 Series: Addresses packaging requirements for winding wires, essential for preserving wire quality during transport and storage.
Summary
IEC 60317-31:2015 plays a crucial role in standardizing the manufacture and quality assurance of high-temperature resistant rectangular copper winding wires with glass fibre insulation. By adhering to this standard, manufacturers and users can ensure electrical components maintain optimal performance and safety in demanding thermal environments. Its clear guidelines on dimensions, construction, and temperature rating facilitate international harmonization and improve overall reliability in electrotechnical applications.
