IEC 60317-32:2015 specifies the requirements of glass fibre wound, resin or varnish impregnated, bare or enamelled rectangular copper winding wire, temperature index 155. The range of nominal conductor dimensions covered by this standard is: - width: min 2,0 mm max 16,0 mm; - thickness: min 0,80 mm max 5,60 mm. The specified combinations of width and thickness as well as the specified width/thickness ratio are according to IEC 60317-0-4. This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition published in 1990, Amendment 1:1997 and Amendment 2:2005. This edition constitutes a technical revision. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition: - new 3.2.2 containing general notes on winding wire, formerly part of the scope; - introduction of glass fibre coverings over grade 1 enamelled conductor in 3.2.2; - revision to references to IEC 60317-0-4 to make clear that their application is normative. Keywords: temperature index 155, winding wire This publication is to be read in conjunction with IEC 60317-0-4:2015.
Abstract
Overview of IEC 60317-32:2015 Standard
The IEC 60317-32:2015 is an international standard issued by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) specifying requirements for glass fibre wound, resin or varnish impregnated, bare or enamelled rectangular copper winding wire with a temperature index of 155. This standard defines the dimensions, material characteristics, and performance criteria essential for producing reliable winding wires used in electrical equipment.
This edition updates and replaces previous versions from 1990, 1997, and 2005, including significant technical revisions to reflect advances in manufacturing and testing. It applies specifically to copper wires with widths ranging from 2.0 mm to 16.0 mm and thicknesses from 0.80 mm to 5.60 mm. The construction features glass fibre winding for thermal stability and mechanical protection combined with resin or varnish impregnation.
IEC 60317-32 should be used in conjunction with IEC 60317-0-4:2015, which covers general requirements and testing methods for this type of winding wire.
Key Topics Covered
-
Material Composition
Rectangular copper conductors wound with glass fibre and impregnated with resin or varnish enhance thermal resistance and mechanical strength. -
Temperature Index 155
Defines the wire's ability to operate reliably at temperatures up to 155°C, critical for applications requiring high thermal stability. -
Dimensional Specifications
Standardized nominal conductor dimensions ensure uniformity; width ranges between 2.0 mm and 16.0 mm, thickness from 0.80 mm to 5.60 mm, with specified width/thickness ratios as per IEC 60317-0-4. -
Glass Fibre Covering Grades
Multiple grades describe coverings over bare or grade 1 and grade 2 enamelled conductors:- GL1: One glass fibre covering
- GL2: Two glass fibre coverings
- Grade 1 and Grade 2 enamelled conductor options exist underneath fibre layers for tailored insulation properties.
-
Test Methods and Limitations
Many tests typically applied in winding wire standards-such as heat shock, cut-through, abrasion resistance, solvent resistance, and solderability-are marked as inappropriate for this specific wire type due to its construction. Conversely, electrical resistance, elongation, flexibility, breakdown voltage, and temperature index tests follow established methods in IEC 60317-0-4. -
Packaging Requirements
Packaging protocols ensure protection and traceability, referenced to IEC 60317-0-4 standards.
Applications
IEC 60317-32:2015 wires are essential components in manufacturing:
-
Electrical Transformers
Providing thermal stability and mechanical durability for transformer windings operating at elevated temperatures. -
High-Performance Electrical Motors
Enabling reliable insulation and winding integrity where rectangular conductors are preferred for efficient slot fill and heat dissipation. -
Industrial and Power Equipment
Used in electromechanical assemblies demanding long-term reliability in thermally demanding environments. -
Impedance Coils and Inductors
Where precise wire shape and thermal ratings benefit performance in inductive components.
These wires ensure enhanced operational life and performance due to their robust impregnation and glass fibre reinforcement, meeting international quality and safety benchmarks.
