IEC 60317-49:2012 specifies the requirements of glass-fibre wound resin or varnish impregnated, bare, grade 1 or grade 2 enamelled round copper winding wire, temperature index 180. The impregnating agent can be, for instance, polyester or polyesterimide resin based. For this type of wire, the heat shock test is inappropriate and therefore a heat shock temperature cannot be established. Consequently, a class based on the requirements for temperature index and heat shock temperature cannot be specified. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition: - addition of requirements for appearance, new subclause 3.3 and - addition of pin hole test requirements, Clause 23, Pin hole test. Keywords: copper winding wire This publication is to be read in conjunction with IEC 60317-0-6:2001. The contents of the corrigendum of January 2013 have been included in this copy.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 60317-49:2012 is an international standard published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that specifies the requirements for a particular type of winding wire: glass-fibre wound high temperature resin or varnish impregnated, bare or enamelled round copper wire, with a temperature index of 180. This standard addresses round copper winding wires that are impregnated with a high temperature, non-silicone based varnish (such as polyester or polyesterimide resin) and reinforced with glass fibre winding for enhanced thermal and mechanical properties.
This standard is essential for manufacturers, engineers, and quality assurance professionals involved in the production and application of high-performance copper winding wires in electrical equipment where high temperature endurance and reliability are critical.
Key Topics
-
Material Composition: Specifies copper wires with a glass-fibre winding impregnated with polyester or polyesterimide resin-based varnish. The wire can be bare or enamelled, using grade 1 or grade 2 enamel.
-
Temperature Index: The wire is designed to withstand continuous operation at a temperature index of 180°C, catering to applications requiring high thermal stability.
-
Appearance and Quality Tests: New requirements have been introduced for the wire’s appearance and pin hole testing to ensure high quality and defect-free insulation.
-
Test Methods: The standard outlines which tests are appropriate and which are not applicable for this type of wire-heat shock, cut-through, abrasion resistance, solderability, and others are deemed inappropriate.
-
Dimensions and Electrical Properties: Wire diameter ranges are defined for different grades with associated electrical resistance and mechanical properties, following clauses from IEC 60317-0-6:2001.
-
Insulation and Impregnation: Glass-fibre winding may be applied in either a single layer or a double layer with layers in opposing directions, impregnated with high temperature varnish.
Applications
IEC 60317-49 winding wires are primarily used in high-temperature electrical devices where enhanced thermal endurance is mandatory. Practical applications include:
-
Electric Motors and Generators: Providing reliable windings that maintain insulation integrity at elevated temperatures.
-
Transformers: Offering robust winding wires that resist thermal and mechanical stresses.
-
High-Temperature Coils and Electromagnetic Devices: Ensuring durable and safe operation in demanding electrical components exposed to heat.
-
Industrial Equipment: Components exposed to harsh environments requiring glass-fibre reinforced insulation for extended lifespan.
Using wires complying with IEC 60317-49 ensures improved reliability and safety in electrical engineering systems operating up to 180°C, contributing to better performance and reduced maintenance.
