IEC 60318-3:2014 specifies an acoustic coupler for the measurement of supra-aural audiometric earphones in the frequency range from 125 Hz to 8 000 Hz. The sound pressure developed by an earphone is not, in general, the same in the coupler as in a person's ear. However, the acoustic coupler can be used as an objective and reproducible means of measuring the output of supra-aural earphones. It can be used for specifying reference equivalent threshold sound pressure levels for the calibration of audiometers. This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition published in 1998 and constitutes a technical revision which includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition: - adjustment of terms and wording to the other parts of IEC 60318; - introduction of maximum permitted uncertainties; - and revised requirements for static pressure equalization. Keywords: electroacoustics, deafness, hearing aids
Abstract
Overview
IEC 60318-3:2014 is an international standard published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that specifies an acoustic coupler for the calibration of supra-aural earphones used in audiometry. This standard defines the technical requirements and construction details of the coupler, which enables objective and reproducible measurement of the acoustic output of supra-aural audiometric earphones in the frequency range of 125 Hz to 8,000 Hz.
The acoustic coupler serves as a precise tool to measure the sound pressure generated by earphones, ensuring consistent calibration and reliable audiometric testing. Although the coupler’s acoustic environment differs from that of the human ear, it provides a reference equivalent threshold sound pressure level (RETSPL) necessary for audiometer calibration.
The 2014 edition includes significant updates from the original 1998 version, including terminology alignment with other IEC 60318 parts, introduction of maximum permitted measurement uncertainties, and revised requirements for static pressure equalization.
Key Topics
-
Acoustic Coupler Construction
The standard details the coupler’s design as a cylindrical cavity with specific critical dimensions and acoustic volume-ensuring stable, accurate coupling with supra-aural earphones. It mandates materials that are acoustically hard and dimensionally stable to prevent performance degradation. -
Precise Cavity Dimensions
Key parameters such as diameter, height, and angle define the cavity, with tight tolerances ensuring reproducibility. Table 1 in the standard guides the coupler height based on the equivalent acoustic volume of the calibrated microphone used within it. -
Static Pressure Equalization
The standard revises requirements for pressure equalization to reduce errors caused by pressure differences between the coupler’s internal cavity and the surrounding environment, enhancing measurement accuracy. -
Calibration Methodology
IEC 60318-3 defines reference environmental conditions and calibration procedures to achieve consistent measurement outputs. The use of calibrated pressure-type microphones with known acoustic volumes is specified to maintain traceability and precision. -
Measurement Uncertainty Limits
The document introduces maximum permitted uncertainties to define allowable variances in measurement accuracy, supporting the confidence and reliability necessary in audiometric calibration.
Applications
-
Audiometric Device Calibration
The acoustic coupler standardized by IEC 60318-3 is essential in calibrating audiometry supra-aural earphones, ensuring that hearing tests yield accurate and repeatable sound pressure levels. -
Hearing Aids and Electroacoustic Testing
Accurate measurement of earphone output supports the development and verification of hearing aids and other assisted hearing technologies, contributing to improved hearing diagnosis and treatment. -
Research and Development in Electroacoustics
The standard provides a benchmark for R&D activities involving electroacoustic components simulating the human head and ear, useful for creating new audiometry equipment and testing devices. -
Quality Control in Manufacturing
Manufacturers of audiometric earphones and devices use this standard for quality assurance, verifying that devices meet defined acoustic performance metrics before market release.
