Describes an acoustic coupler for loading an earphone or hearing aid with a specified acoustic impedance when determining its physical performance characteristics, in the frequency range 125 Hz to 8 kHz. It is suitable for air conduction hearing aids and earphones, coupled to the ear by means of ear inserts e.g. ear moulds or similar devices. The sound pressure developed by an earphone is not, in general, the same in the coupler as in a person's ear. However, it can be used as a simple and ready means for the exchange of specifications and of physical data on hearing aids and for the calibration of specified insert earphones used in audiometry. This first edition of IEC 60318-5 cancels and replaces IEC 60126:1973.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 60318-5:2006 is an international standard issued by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that focuses on electroacoustics, specifically simulators of the human head and ear. This part of the series defines the specifications for a 2 cm³ acoustic coupler designed for measuring hearing aids and earphones that use ear inserts such as ear molds. The standard provides guidelines for loading these devices with a specified acoustic impedance to accurately determine their physical performance within the frequency range of 125 Hz to 8 kHz.
As a replacement for the older IEC 60126:1973, IEC 60318-5 presents a modernized, precise methodology for calibrating and exchanging specifications for hearing devices and insert earphones, especially useful in audiometry and related fields.
Key Topics
- Acoustic Coupler Design: The standard details the construction of the 2 cm³ coupler which simulates the acoustic loading conditions of the human ear canal, specifically for ear insert-coupled hearing devices.
- Measurement Range: Covers frequency response tests from 125 Hz to 8 kHz to evaluate physical performance characteristics.
- Calibration Procedures: Provides guidance on calibration methods, including the use of a calibrated pressure type microphone and static pressure equalization to ensure accuracy.
- Coupling Techniques: Defines how hearing aids and earphones with various ear insert types-such as in-the-ear, behind-the-ear, and spectacle hearing aids-should be coupled to the coupler.
- Measurement Uncertainty: Specifies maximum permitted expanded uncertainties to guarantee reliable and consistent test results.
- Reference Environmental Conditions: Sets ambient conditions for calibration to maintain standardization between tests and laboratories.
Applications
IEC 60318-5:2006 is critical for professionals involved in the design, manufacturing, testing, and certification of hearing aids and insert earphones. Key applications include:
- Hearing Aid Performance Testing: Enables manufacturers and laboratories to measure acoustic output accurately under standardized conditions resembling the human ear.
- Audiometric Equipment Calibration: Provides a reliable method for calibrating insert earphones used during audiometric testing to ensure consistency and accuracy in hearing evaluations.
- Research and Development: Supports R&D efforts by offering a repeatable test environment that reflects real-world ear coupling conditions.
- Quality Assurance: Assists in maintaining compliance with international performance requirements, supporting product reliability and safety.
- Acoustic Device Specification Exchange: Facilitates communication and specification exchange between manufacturers, testers, and regulatory bodies using a common measurement standard.
Related Standards
IEC 60318-5 is part of a series dedicated to simulators of the human head and ear, and as such, it aligns with several other standards that collectively ensure comprehensive evaluation of hearing devices:
- IEC 60318-1 through IEC 60318-4: Cover other types of couplers and simulators for air and bone conduction measurements.
- IEC 60645 Series: Standards for audiometric equipment testing procedures.
- ISO 389 Series: Standards defining reference zero sound pressure levels for audiometric applications.
- IEC 60118 Series: Relates to electroacoustic performance requirements for hearing aids.
Implementing IEC 60318-5 alongside these related standards ensures a robust framework for the design, testing, and certification of hearing devices and measurement instruments.
