lEC 60320-1:2021 sets the general requirements for appliance couplers for two poles and two poles with earth contact and for the connection of electrical devices for household and similar onto the mains supply. This document is also valid for appliance inlets/appliance outlets integrated or incorporated in appliances. This fourth edition cancels and replaces the third edition published in 2015 and Amendment 1:2018. This edition constitutes a technical revision. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition: introduction of necessary tolerances throughout this document; the heating test from edition 2 is reintroduced in 18.2; temperature rise added for plug connectors in Clause 21; change for better readability in 23.3; updated lateral pull test in 23.6 for connectors/plug connectors with separate front parts; revision of 24.1 for ball pressure test; Clause 27 for glow wire test is updated; revision of Annex C for test sequences; additional Annex E for additional tests and requirements for appliance couplers intended to be used in ambient temperatures above +35 °C.
Abstract
IEC 60320-1:2021 - Overview
IEC 60320-1:2021 specifies the general requirements for appliance couplers for household and similar general purposes - covering two‑pole and two‑pole with earth appliance couplers and the connection of electrical devices to the mains. This fourth edition (Edition 4.0, 2021) cancels and replaces the 2015 edition and its 2018 amendment and constitutes a technical revision that is applicable to appliance inlets and outlets whether integrated or incorporated in appliances.
Key changes in the 2021 edition include introduction of dimensional tolerances, reintroduction of the heating test (Clause 18.2), temperature rise requirements for plug connectors (Clause 21), updates to mechanical tests (Clauses 23.3, 23.6), revisions to ball pressure and glow‑wire tests (Clause 24.1, Clause 27), and the addition of Annex E for couplers intended for ambient temperatures above +35 °C.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope & classification: Standard ratings, classifications for appliance couplers and plug/connectors.
- Dimensions & compatibility: Standardized dimensions, single‑pole connections and compatibility requirements.
- Protection & earthing: Protection against electric shock, shrouds, earthing provisions and marking requirements.
- Materials & construction: Pin construction (including variants for higher ambient temperatures up to +90 °C), contact pressure, enclosures, terminals and secure connections.
- Thermal and fire safety: Heating tests, temperature rise limits, ball pressure and glow‑wire tests to assess heat/fire resistance.
- Mechanical strength: Lateral pull, torque, pull tests, impact, flexing, free fall and deformation tests for connectors and plug connectors (including connectors with separate front parts).
- Electrical safety tests: Insulation resistance, dielectric strength, breaking capacity and normal operation tests.
- Durability & ageing: Resistance to heat, ageing of thermoplastics and elastomers, resistance to rusting.
- Cords & anchorage: Requirements for cord types, cable anchorage, flexing and strain relief tests.
- EMC: Basic immunity and emission requirements for accessories without electronic components.
- Annexes: Test sequences (Annex C), proof tracking (Annex A), routine tests (Annex B), and additional tests for high ambient use (Annex E).
Practical applications & who uses it
IEC 60320-1:2021 is used by:
- Manufacturers of power cords, appliance couplers, plugs and inlets/outlets
- Appliance OEMs designing integrated inlets/outlets
- Test laboratories and certification bodies performing safety and type‑approval testing
- Compliance engineers, product safety managers and regulatory authorities ensuring market access
Practical applications include design validation, type testing, production routine tests, and verifying compatibility and safety of mains connectors used on household appliances, consumer electronics and similar equipment.
