IEC 60332-3-10:2018 details the apparatus and its arrangement and calibration for methods of test for the assessment of vertical flame spread of vertically mounted bunched wires or cables, electrical or optical, under defined conditions. This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition published in 2000 and Amendment 1:2008. This edition constitutes a technical revision. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition: a) adjustments have been made to the title, and elsewhere, to emphasise the standard is applicable to optical fibre cables as well as metallic conductor types; b) details of the way in which cables are mounted on the ladder have been better defined in order to improve repeatability and reproducibility; c) the connection of the venturi mixer to the burner is better defined. It has the status of a group safety publication in accordance with IEC Guide 104. The contents of the corrigendum of October 2018 have been included in this copy.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 60332-3-10:2018 establishes the specifications for apparatus and its arrangement in laboratory testing to assess the vertical flame spread of bunched wires and cables-both electric and optical fibre-when subjected to defined fire conditions. Published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), this standard forms part of a comprehensive series addressing fire testing of cable products. The 2018 edition brings clarified requirements and updated guidance for improved repeatability, applicability to both optical fibre and metallic cables, and clearer apparatus connection specifications.
Understanding and applying IEC 60332-3-10:2018 is vital for manufacturers, testing laboratories, and regulatory bodies involved in cable quality, safety, and conformity assessment under fire exposure scenarios.
Key Topics
- Scope and Applicability: The standard applies to both insulated metallic conductor cables and optical fibre cables installed vertically in bundles, ensuring that both types are evaluated consistently under fire conditions.
- Test Apparatus: Detailed requirements cover the chamber dimensions, air supply system, ladder types for mounting test samples, and effluent cleaning attachments.
- Ignition Source: Specifies the use and arrangement of ribbon-type propane gas burners with venturi mixers and flow meters to initiate and control the fire exposure during testing.
- Test Environment Conditions: Defines atmospheric conditions-such as air flow rate, temperature, pressure, and wind speed-under which tests must be conducted to ensure reliable and reproducible results.
- Calibration and Setup: Guidance on calibrating burners and flowmeters for consistent and accurate delivery of heat and air, ensuring comparability across different testing facilities.
- Safety Requirements: Recommends safety measures for handling gases, flame failure protection, and sequenced operation to mitigate risks during testing procedures.
Applications
IEC 60332-3-10:2018 plays a critical role in:
- Cable Manufacturing and Quality Control: Manufacturers use the standard to ensure their electric and optical fibre cables meet international fire safety requirements, specifically controlling the vertical flame spread potential in real installations.
- Third-Party Testing and Certification: Accredited laboratories apply the procedures for conformity assessment, enabling cables to be marketed as compliant with recognized safety standards.
- Product Development: Design engineers reference the document during the development stage for selecting suitable materials and construction methods that enhance fire performance.
- Regulatory Compliance: National and regional authorities reference IEC 60332-3-10:2018 when specifying fire safety obligations for building cabling and infrastructure installations.
- Installation Best Practices: Provides industry stakeholders guidance on configurations that influence flammability, aiding in safer installation methods for both power and communications networks.
Related Standards
IEC 60332-3-10:2018 is part of the IEC 60332 series, which collectively addresses fire testing of cables:
- IEC 60332-1 & IEC 60332-2: Test methods for single vertical insulated wires and cables.
- IEC 60332-3-21 to 3-25: Define different test categories (A F/R, A, B, C, D) based on test duration and volume of non-metallic material, as well as sample mounting methods.
