IEC 60335-2-53:2011 deals with the safety of electric sauna heating appliances and infrared emitting units having a rated power input not exceeding 20 kW, their rated voltage being not more than 250 V for single-phase appliances and 480 V for other appliances. The appliances covered by this standard are intended for use in the home and in public saunas located in blocks of flats, hotels and similar locations. This standard also deals with the safety of electric sauna heating appliances provided with a humidifier unit, their rated voltage being not more than 250 V for single-phase appliances and 480 V for other appliances. The room air is humidified by evaporating or atomising water. This fourth edition cancels and replaces the third edition published in 2002 and its Amendment 1 (2007). It constitutes a technical revision. The principal changes in this edition as compared with the third edition of IEC 60335-2-53 are as follows: - the scope is changed to cover infrared cabins; - additional requirements for recessed sauna heaters are added; - requirements of electronic interlocks are added (22.108). The attention of National Committees is drawn to the fact that equipment organizations may need a transitional period following publication of a new, amended or revised IEC publication in which to make products in accordance with the new requirements and to equip themselves for conducting new or revised tests. It is the recommendation of the committee that the content of this publication be adopted for implementation nationally not earlier than 12 months or later than 36 months from the date of publication. This publication is to be read in conjunction with IEC 60335-1:2010.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 60335-2-53:2011 is an international safety standard developed by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) specifically for household and similar electrical appliances used in sauna heating and infrared cabins. This standard addresses safety requirements for electric sauna heating appliances and infrared emitting units with rated power inputs up to 20 kW. It applies to single-phase appliances with rated voltages not exceeding 250 V and other appliances up to 480 V. The scope covers appliances intended for use in private homes, as well as public saunas located in blocks of flats, hotels, and comparable settings.
This fourth edition, including Amendment 1 published in 2017, revises the earlier 2002 edition to broaden the scope to infrared cabins, include additional requirements for recessed sauna heaters, and introduce electronic interlock requirements. Compliance with IEC 60335-2-53:2011 ensures that sauna appliances meet rigorous safety standards in electrical design, construction, and operation, contributing to safer consumer products.
Key Topics
- Scope and Application: Focus on electric sauna heaters and infrared cabins under 20 kW power input, applicable in residential and public sauna environments.
- Safety Requirements: Covers protection against electric shock, mechanical hazards, abnormal operation, and thermal safety.
- Testing Conditions: Specifies general and particular test conditions including moisture resistance, leakage current, electrical insulation strength, and endurance.
- Marking and Instructions: Requirements for clear user instructions and appliance marking to ensure safe use, including safety warnings and electrical ratings.
- Construction and Components: Detailed criteria for internal wiring, terminals, earthing, clearances, and material resistance to heat, fire, and corrosion.
- Electronic Interlocks: New provisions to enhance user safety by controlling access and operation of heating elements.
- Specific Configurations: Added requirements for recessed heater installations and humidifier units that humidify room air by evaporating or atomizing water.
- Infrared Cabins: Inclusion of infrared emitting units in the standard’s scope, ensuring consistent safety benchmarks across sauna heating technologies.
Applications
IEC 60335-2-53:2011 provides essential safety guidelines for:
- Manufacturers designing and producing electric sauna heaters and infrared cabins for residential or commercial use.
- Certification bodies assessing conformity of sauna heating appliances to international electrical safety standards.
- Suppliers and importers ensuring products meet recognized safety criteria to facilitate access to global markets.
- Sauna facility operators and maintenance professionals seeking compliance and safe operation protocols in hotels, gyms, and apartment complexes.
- Regulatory authorities implementing product safety regulations and standards at national or regional levels.
The standard’s requirements support the development of safe, reliable, and user-friendly sauna heating solutions, reducing risks related to fire, electrical shock, and mechanical failures.
Related Standards
- IEC 60335-1: The general standard for safety of household and similar electrical appliances, which IEC 60335-2-53 supplements and modifies.
- IEC 60335 Series: Covers various household electrical appliances including kitchen appliances, air conditioners, and heaters.
- ISO/IEC Directives: Provides the framework for drafting and revising IEC standards, ensuring harmonization and consistency.
- National Adoptions: Countries often implement IEC 60335-2-53 in national regulations with potential modifications for local requirements.
For manufacturers and users engaged with electric sauna heating appliances and infrared cabins, adherence to IEC 60335-2-53:2011 is crucial for achieving internationally recognized safety, enhancing product reliability, and safeguarding consumers across diverse usage environments.
