IEC 60335-2-85:2022 deals with the safety of electric fabric steamers intended for household and similar purposes, their rated voltage being not more than 250 V including direct current (DC) supplied appliances and battery-operated appliances. Appliances not intended for normal household use, but that nevertheless possibly pose a source of danger to the public, such as appliances intended to be used by laymen in shops, laundries and dry cleaners, are within the scope of this standard. As far as is practicable, this standard deals with the common hazards presented by appliances that are encountered by all persons in and around the home. However, in general, it does not take into account: – persons (including children) whose physical, sensory or mental capabilities; or lack of experience and knowledge prevents them from using the appliance safely without supervision or instruction; – children playing with the appliance. Attention is drawn to the fact that – for appliances intended to be used in vehicles or on board ships or aircraft, additional requirements can be necessary; – in many countries additional requirements are specified by the national health authorities, the national authorities responsible for the protection of labour and similar authorities. This standard does not apply to – appliances intended to be used in locations where special conditions prevail, such as the presence of a corrosive or explosive atmosphere (dust, vapour or gas); – electric irons (IEC 60335-2-3); – ironers (IEC 60335-2-44); – surface-cleaning appliances for household use employing liquids or steam (IEC 60335 2 54); – appliances connected to the water mains. This third edition cancels and replaces the second edition published in 2002, Amendment 1:2008 and Amendment 2:2017. This edition constitutes a technical revision. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition: a) alignment with IEC 60335-1:2020; b) conversion of some notes to normative text (Clause 1); c) introduction of pressurized fabric steamer. This part 2 is to be used in conjunction with the latest edition of IEC 60335-1 and its amendments unless that edition precludes it; in that case, the latest edition that does not preclude it is used. It was established on the basis of the sixth edition (2020) of that standard.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 60335-2-85:2022 is the international safety standard for household and similar electric fabric steamers (rated voltage ≤ 250 V, including DC and battery-operated appliances). This third edition (2022) replaces earlier editions and constitutes a technical revision. It defines particular safety requirements and tests for fabric steamers used at home and in similar environments - including appliances used by laymen in shops, laundries and dry cleaners - and introduces specific coverage for pressurized fabric steamers.
The standard is intended to be used in conjunction with IEC 60335-1 (general requirements for household appliances) and deals with common hazards (electrical, mechanical, thermal, fire and radiation) under normal and expected abnormal use.
Key topics and technical requirements
This part 2 supplements or modifies clauses in IEC 60335-1 and addresses fabric steamer‑specific issues. Major topics include:
- Scope and exclusions - applicability to portable fabric steamers and battery devices; exclusions such as appliances connected to water mains, electric irons (IEC 60335-2-3), ironers (IEC 60335-2-44) and surface-cleaning appliances using steam or liquids (IEC 60335-2-54).
- Alignment with IEC 60335-1:2020 - updated normative references and converted notes to normative text where appropriate.
- Introduction of pressurized fabric steamers - specific requirements for appliances that operate under pressure.
- Safety tests and verification - requirements for leakage current, electric strength at operating temperature, moisture resistance, transient overvoltages, endurance and abnormal operation testing.
- Mechanical and thermal hazards - stability, mechanical strength, protection against access to live parts, heating and surface temperatures, resistance to heat and fire.
- Construction and components - internal wiring, terminals, earthing, clearances and creepage distances, and requirements for components and cords.
- Marking and instructions - required user information and safety instructions for safe use and maintenance.
(Clause and test numbering follows the IEC 60335 series conventions.)
Practical applications - who uses this standard
IEC 60335-2-85:2022 is essential for:
- Appliance manufacturers and product designers developing fabric steamers (including pressurized models).
- Compliance and safety engineers preparing technical documentation and risk assessments.
- Test laboratories and certification bodies conducting conformity assessment and type testing.
- Regulatory authorities and market surveillance bodies referencing safety requirements for national adoption.
- Quality assurance teams implementing production inspections and pre‑market testing.
Use cases include product design validation, type testing for CE/CB schemes, preparation of user manuals/marking, and supplier/component selection to meet safety targets.
Related standards
- IEC 60335-1 (general household appliance safety) - to be used together with this part 2.
- Other related part‑2 standards for excluded appliance types: IEC 60335-2-3, IEC 60335-2-44, IEC 60335-2-54.
- National wiring rules (e.g., IEC 60364 considerations) and country‑specific health or labour safety regulations may also apply.
