The particular requirements of this part of IEC 60364 apply to: - sauna cabins erected on site, e.g. in a location or in a room; - the room where the sauna heater is, or the sauna heating appliances are installed. In this case the whole room is considered as the sauna. They do not apply to prefabricated sauna cabins complying with a relevant equipment standard. Where facilities like cold water basins or showers, etc. are installed, the requirements of Part 7-701 also apply. The main technical changes with respect to the previous edition concern the updating of requirements to take into account the evolution in sauna equipment, with particular emphasis on prefabricated cabins. In addition, in response to a need from installers, there has been some elaboration on temperature repartition in saunas as well as protection against electric shock. Finally, the four zones described in the first edition have now been reduced to three zones.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 60364-7-703:2004 is an international standard issued by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that specifies the electrical installation requirements for rooms and cabins containing sauna heaters. This standard falls under the broader IEC 60364 series that governs electrical installations in buildings. The part 7-703 focuses specifically on special installations or locations involving sauna heaters, ensuring safety and compliance with modern electrical practices.
The standard applies to:
- Sauna cabins erected on site within a room or dedicated space
- Entire rooms where sauna heating appliances are installed and where the whole room is treated as a sauna
- It explicitly excludes prefabricated sauna cabins that comply with relevant equipment standards
IEC 60364-7-703 complements other IEC 60364 parts by adapting general electrical safety requirements to address the unique conditions found in saunas, such as high temperatures and moisture. It also references Part 7-701 when cold water basins or showers are present in sauna facilities.
Key Topics
-
Specialized Safety Requirements:
The standard emphasizes protection against electric shock in sauna rooms, taking into account the unique hazards of high temperature and humidity. -
Zoning and Volume Definitions:
The 2004 revision reduced the number of defined electrical zones from four to three, providing clearer guidance on equipment placement and wiring practices specific to sauna environments. -
Temperature Distribution Considerations:
IEC 60364-7-703 elaborates on how temperature variations within sauna rooms affect electrical installations, ensuring that equipment and wiring can withstand the ambient conditions safely. -
Scope and Applicability:
This part of IEC 60364 specifically applies to on-site constructed sauna cabins and rooms, excluding prefabricated cabins following other standards. It clearly defines which sauna types fall under its requirements. -
Reference to Other Standards:
It mandates adherence to IEC 60335-2-53, concerning safety rules for sauna heating appliances, and IEC 60364-7-701 for rooms containing showers or cold water basins, ensuring a holistic safety framework.
Applications
IEC 60364-7-703 is crucial for professionals involved in:
- Design and installation of sauna electrical systems: Electricians and engineers benefit from clear safety protocols tailored to sauna environments.
- Building and property developers: Compliance with this standard is necessary when incorporating sauna facilities in residential, commercial, or leisure buildings.
- Manufacturers and installers of sauna heating equipment: To ensure that installed systems meet current safety and performance standards.
- Inspection and certification authorities: Establishing conformity to electrical safety standards in specialized installations such as saunas.
By applying IEC 60364-7-703, stakeholders mitigate risks related to electrical hazards in saunas, such as electric shock and equipment failure, ensuring safe operation under elevated temperature and moisture conditions.
Related Standards
-
IEC 60364 Series:
Covers general electrical installation rules for buildings, including foundational principles (Part 1), protection for safety (Part 4), equipment selection and installation (Part 5), and verification (Part 6). -
IEC 60335-2-53:
Specifies safety rules for sauna heaters as household appliances, directly referenced in IEC 60364-7-703 for appliance compliance. -
IEC 60364-7-701:
Details requirements for electrical installations in rooms containing baths or showers, applicable in sauna facilities with water features to complement sauna-specific rules.
Using this interconnected framework of standards ensures comprehensive safety and effective electrical design tailored to the challenges of sauna environments.
