IEC 60379:2023 specifies methods for measuring the performance of electric storage water heaters to produce domestic potable or non-potable hot water for household and similar use. The object is to state and define the principal performance characteristics of electric storage water heaters and to describe the test methods for measuring these characteristics. This document does not apply to; - storage water heaters that use electricity as a secondary source of heating the water; - storage water heaters that do not use a tank to store hot water; - electric storage water heaters that do not meet the minimum (or maximum) output performance of the smallest (or biggest) load profile, as defined in Table 3; - water-heaters without thermal insulation. This document does not specify safety requirements. For safety requirements, see IEC 60335-1 in conjunction with IEC 60335-2-21. This fourth edition cancels and replaces the third edition published in 1987. This edition constitutes a technical revision. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition: sustainable development aspects of EU legislation are taken into account, including features such as smart control, V40 modification and measuring procedures for multi-tank appliances.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 60379:2023 is the latest international standard published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) providing standardized methods for measuring the performance of electric storage water heaters designed for household purposes. This fourth edition, replacing the 1987 version, focuses on precise test procedures and performance criteria for electric storage water heaters that supply domestic potable or non-potable hot water. It excludes appliances using electricity as a secondary heat source, non-tank water heaters, those outside established load profiles, or without thermal insulation. The standard emphasizes energy efficiency, smart control integration, and multi-tank appliance performance, aligning with sustainable development goals, particularly those in EU legislation.
Key Topics
- Performance Measurement Methods: Defines test procedures under controlled conditions, including installation, stabilization, heat-up, tapping profiles, and reporting of results.
- Energy Efficiency Calculations: Specifies how to calculate electrical energy efficiency (η_elec_wh) and annual energy consumption using standardized formulas.
- Smart Control Features: Introduces measurement protocols for appliances equipped with smart control systems, reflecting modern advancements in energy management.
- Multi-Tank Appliances: Details procedures for testing and measuring storage water heaters with multiple tanks, considering different configurations.
- Standing Loss Assessment: Outlines methods to quantify heat loss over 24 hours in both single and multi-tank setups.
- Reference Conditions and Load Profiles: Sets standardized environmental and operational parameters for accurate and reproducible results, including detailed load and tapping profiles.
- Data Reporting Requirements: Provides comprehensive guidelines for how measured and calculated data should be documented and presented for certification and compliance purposes.
Applications
IEC 60379:2023 is essential for manufacturers, testing laboratories, certification bodies, and regulatory authorities involved in:
- Designing and validating electric storage water heaters for household use.
- Conducting laboratory performance testing to meet international efficiency and quality standards.
- Ensuring compliance with regional energy regulations, including EU directives on sustainable development.
- Developing smart, energy-efficient water heaters with enhanced control and monitoring capabilities.
- Evaluating multi-tank and complex water heating systems to optimize performance and energy consumption.
- Benchmarking products to improve market competitiveness and consumer transparency.
- Supporting environmental policy implementation by promoting energy conservation and reduced emissions in residential hot water production.
