IEC 60384-3:2016 applies to fixed tantalum electrolytic surface mount capacitors with solid (MnO2) electrolyte primarily intended for d.c. applications for use in electronic equipment. The following two styles are considered: - Style 1 - Capacitors protected with external materials; - Style 2 - Capacitors unprotected with external materials. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition: a) Revision of the structure in accordance with ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2:2011 (sixth edition) to the extent practicable, and harmonization between other similar kinds of documents. b) In addition, Clause 4 and all the tables have been reviewed in order to prevent duplications and contradictions.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 60384-3:2016 is an international standard published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that specifies requirements for surface mount fixed tantalum electrolytic capacitors with solid manganese dioxide (MnO₂) electrolyte. These capacitors are designed primarily for direct current (d.c.) applications in electronic equipment. The standard covers two capacitor styles:
- Style 1: Capacitors protected with external materials
- Style 2: Capacitors unprotected with external materials
This edition aligns with the ISO/IEC Directives Part 2:2011 for document structure and harmonizes with related standards to reduce duplication and contradictions. It sets key parameters for technical characteristics, quality assessment, and test procedures that manufacturers and users must follow to ensure reliable capacitor performance in electronic systems.
Key Topics

- Detailed testing methods including:
- Leakage current measurement to assess performance and safety.
- Capacitance and loss angle (tan δ) assessments to verify electrical consistency.
- Impedance and equivalent series resistance (ESR) evaluations where applicable.
- Mechanical stress tests such as shear and substrate bending tests.
- Thermal stress tests including rapid temperature changes and soldering heat resistance.
- Climatic tests covering damp heat, dry heat, and cold conditions to simulate real environment stresses.
- Endurance tests for lifecycle and reliability validation.
Marking and Documentation
- Guidelines for capacitor and packaging marking to ensure traceability and correct identification.
- Requirements for manufacturer-supplied data in detailed specifications, including mounting instructions and dimensional drawings.
Applications
IEC 60384-3:2016 capacitors are essential for a broad range of electronic equipment relying on surface mount technology, such as:
- Consumer electronics that demand compact, reliable capacitors with stable performance and long lifespan.
- Industrial control systems where harsh environments require components that resist mechanical stress and thermal cycling.
- Telecommunications equipment requiring precise electrical characteristics and high-quality factor capacitors to maintain signal integrity.
- Automotive electronics, including ECU modules, where robust capacitor performance under temperature extremes is critical.
- Medical devices demanding stringent quality standards and electrical safety compliance.
By adhering to IEC 60384-3:2016, manufacturers and designers can ensure their tantalum electrolytic capacitors will meet international quality benchmarks, compatibility, and safety requirements, facilitating global market acceptance.
