IEC 60567:2011 deals with the techniques for sampling free gases from gas-collecting relays from power transformers. Three methods of sampling free gases are described. The techniques described take account, on the one hand, of the problems peculiar to analyses associated with acceptance testing in the factory, where gas contents of oil are generally very low and, on the other hand, of the problems imposed by monitoring equipment in the field, where transport of samples may be by un-pressurized air freight and where considerable differences in ambient temperature may exist between the plant and the examining laboratory. Since the publication of the previous edition, CIGRE TF.D1.01.15 has made progress in several areas of dissolved gas analysis (DGA). These advances are included in this fourth edition.
Abstract
Overview
IEC 60567:2011 is an international standard published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) providing comprehensive guidance on the sampling and analysis of gases in oil-filled electrical equipment such as power transformers. This fourth edition addresses methods for sampling free and dissolved gases from oil and gas-collecting relays (e.g., Buchholz relays) used in transformer monitoring. It incorporates advances from the CIGRE working group TF.D1.01.15 to improve dissolved gas analysis (DGA).
The standard is essential for professionals involved in the maintenance, diagnosis, and testing of oil-filled electrical apparatus, ensuring accurate detection of faults through gas-in-oil analysis under varying field and factory conditions.
Key Topics
-
Sampling Techniques for Free Gases:
IEC 60567 details three primary methods for free gas sampling from gas-collecting relays:- Sampling by syringe
- Sampling by oil displacement
- Sampling by vacuum extraction
These methods account for low gas content during factory acceptance tests and field complexities such as un-pressurized transport and temperature deviations.

Oil Sampling and Transfer:
Guidance on accurate sampling, labelling, and transferring of oil samples to preserve integrity for dissolved gas analysis (DGA). Covers the use of syringes, ampoules, flexible metal bottles, and rigid containers. -
Gas-in-Oil Standards Preparation:
Procedures for preparing gas-in-oil calibration standards critical for analytical accuracy, with descriptions of equipment and detailed step-by-step methods. -
Gas Extraction Methods:
Multiple extraction techniques for dissolved gases, including:- Multi-cycle vacuum extraction with Toepler pump
- Partial degassing method
- Stripping extraction
- Headspace method with calibration details
-
Gas Chromatography Analysis:
Specifications for gas chromatography equipment, carriers, detectors, and operating procedures necessary for analyzing extracted gases. The standard details calibration guidelines and quality control measures to ensure repeatability, reproducibility, and detection limits are met. -
Quality Control and Reporting:
Verification processes for the entire analytical system and recommendations for reporting results to maintain reliability and traceability.
